Well since I can't finish one project before starting another, I just picked up two more receivers to build out. One is a 1940 No1 MkIII BSA with cutoff slot which prompts my question. Are there any differences in the forend of a MkIII without volley sights, and the forend of a MkIII*, besides the lower wood on the right to clear the cutoff? As long as the rest of the profile is the same I can cut away the stock for the cutoff. But if it would need reprofiling I'd rather wait and see what I can find for original wood.

yes , the mark III forearm has a cutout at the location of the cutoff , the nark III* does not , but not a big deal in either case as there were lots on mkIII converted to mkIII* and there were a bunch re-fit back after the war , either will be correct , in today's market you need to get what you can find ,
however finding a cutoff and screw would be a lot more work i think , if it was actually drilled and tapped for the screw as many retained the slot but lacked the further machining to fit a cutoff , good lock in your endeavor ,

Yes. The forend that has the volley sight was 'swollen' (thicker) in the area where the volley sight was fitted to allow for trimming of the wood to allow the sight to be fitted. Forends designed NOT to have a volley sight fitted are 'thinner' and if you try and fit one could result in you breaking thru the forend. |

To over simplify things, there are three styles of Sht.LE fore end.
The early one with the volley sights. The transitional one with the swell in the wood for the volley sight plate but the inlet for it not cut. And the third style that is slimmer in the volley plate area and has no provision for volley sighting front or back. Of the third style there will be two variations, early ones with provision for the cut off and late made ones with no cut off plate provision. So to answer your question... yes, a late slim stock without provision for the cut off plate is the same overall profile and can be modified to fit one. |

Thanks everyone! That decides what stock sets to get. I'll take a look at the cutoff screw hole when they arrive and see if it is tapped or not. If not that solves that easily enough. In the meantime it's time to unpack two more barrels from the cosmoline.
