Does anyone know what the little hole is for on the crossguard?

That crossguard is the same exact crossguard used on the Bayonet for the No5Mk1 from what I have read on the subject and it was described as being used on another bayonet as well. Something to do with a ramrod or cleaning rod guide when the bayonet is fixed to the rifle...

there was an obscure wire handguard that would clip into it and the socket , somewhere here i had an image and a homemade version i was sent - i think i found it in the "bible of enfields" and when i asked about it someone sent it to me ,

Yes its the same diameter as the big end of the flashider. But the bayonet lug is completely different.

You all convinced me that I needed on to complete my set even though I had a No 4 bayonet.
