Did you reharden the bolt face after : I then started on the headspacing by shortening the overall length of the bolthead, The hardening tends to be only 'thou' thick. If you didn't harden then you might find that the steel compresses under the recoil 'hammering' and your headspace increases.

I thought, with your experiences, you would have done, but others may not think of it.

One of the reasons that 7.62 NATO chambers were longer than .308 Win chambers was to accommodate a larger variation in cartridge case headspace length. All NATO stamped ammunition was supposed to function in these weapons chambered for 7.62, and those tolerances were not as tight as .308 Win SAAMI specs (case maximum dimensions). Although rare, you may come across some 7.62 cartridges that won’t chamber in your rifle if the headspace is toward the SAAMI .308 minimum chamber length.
As they say, your rifle “is what it is”. And it does conform to the .308 Win chamber headspace dimensions. It may be shorter than the 7.62 NATO MIN headspace. I think my No. 4 conversions are also likely shorter than the 7.62 NATO MIN. Of course, there are even different standards on what that MIN headspace dimension is! |

There are actually 12 different headspace minimum and 12 different maximum dimensions for 7.62 NATO chambered firearms. Differing requirements for new, used and FTR rebuilding checks for example, very different requirements for the L8 and the 'Mini-Gun' etc etc but they are all 7.62 NATO

I made a pot of coffee the other day, poured myself a cup and then sat on the livingroom floor and chambered 1480 rounds of reloaded Lake City cartridges just to make sure each one chambered correctly. Took two cups of coffee and roughly 5 hours and 45 minutes to do it...

I’d expect all US, UK and Canadian 7.62 will chamber fine, it’s some of the other NATO countries that may not be so stringent in their production QA.
You can do the same thing by using your case headspace gage, drop it in and see if they are below flush.
