That upper group, looks like 4/5 shots at about 1 inch spread. That’s pretty good for 40 yards. Cast bullets, correct?

Yes, I cast these, use an old Ideal #308329 mould, they weigh about 185 gr. These have been squished [technical term?] and resized to .314. The lee sizer die has a taper to it. I put the 308 bullet in it gc down and squish it. The bottom is then .314 but the top is about .320. I then run it through the same die to size the whole bullet to .314. Makes kind of a bore riding boolit. Not target grade but they will work in my cas club’s BAM shoots. Minute of SASS marshal but we use 16 inch circles for our rifles. Would love to find some .311 jacketed to see what it can do with correct bullets. August 3 update- [no need to bump this until something is actually done] I have gotten back from my 3200 mile, 57 hr [over 9 days] road trip. Have finally begun the semi inlet fore stock install. This critter is a pita but it is coming.

Been trying to install the pita semi inlet forestock on the MkIII. The inlets for the recvr and trigger hsg are not quite true to each other but I’ve gotten it almost on the gun. Some more sanding on the rear of the stock as I can’t quite get the small screw on the trigger guard through the holes but now the castle screw is wonky and is not true to the guard mortise. Might have to enlarge a hole or two. There was a small runout in the bbl channel or nosecap inletting that kept the bbl from sliding through the hole in the nosecap. Think that’s ok now. Should finish the inletting today and start on the profiling. I also need a nose cap nut and a trigger guard collar as my stock has neither. Might have some steel tubing in my shop but what is the size/tpi on the cap nut screw? After I get this aggravation on the rifle I’ll get back to shooting it. No need to waste ammo until then as the fore stock has such a huge effect on the poi.
Finally got it on but it still is in a bind somewhere, thinking its in the trigger housing mortise. The mortise fits the guard fine just but won’t assemble without binding which is pulling the forestock away from the bbl which isn’t good. I turned down the head of the castle screw, enlarged the hole in the guard and recut the countersunk hole which eliminated the binding there. Getting a nice fit to the steel at the rear. Satisfied with the fit- for now. Started paring down and shaping the exterior and blending it with the handguards. The forestock was proud on the entire left but lean on the right. I don’t think it was centered on the duplicator. Coming along, still need a steel insert for the castle screw and nut for the nosecap screw.

Guys, how long should the collar be on my 1942 smle? The one on the old junk stock is .500 inch but measuring the distance from the top of the threaded piece of the recvr to the base of the guard mortise in my new fore stock I get .600 in. As I said this forestock is not the greatest. I robbed the nosecap nut from the old stock.
Decided that I wasn’t going to invest the effort in a nice refinish like what I did on my ‘03s. So I’m starting with the staining without doing a super sanding job. One coat of stain done. See what it looks like tomorrow. Gave it several more stainings of Casey’s walnut and a rubbing of bronze wool to eliminate the whiskers. I think that they’ve changed the formula on me as it’s not red anymore just walnut, not rusty at all. I’ll have to find something else for my other milsurp builds if they did. Sent them an inquiry last night. Not too important for the smle build as they come in every ‘colour’ imaginable. Just did the first coat of truoil. I couldn’t stand it so I put it all together and fired a shot yesterday fed from the mag to make sure nothing was weird. It weell ’keell’. The upper handguard might be an issue as it got broken in shipment plus it’s not a good match to the other pieces. I should be able to epoxy it together with a piece of thin brass to reinforce it at the inner band. I’m ready to get this done so I can get back to shooting it. Experimented with some red photographic oil paint that my son used to color b/w photos. Added it to a little truoil, mixed fine and rubbed it on my too brown forestock. Looks like a pretty close match. Check it tomorrow in the daylight….Looked a little shinier than the buttstock so I’ll hit it with some wool and a coat of plain truoil next.

Thought that I was about done but when I screw down the nosecap it’s wonky so ive got to do some more tinkering there. Got the wood colored pretty close.

You're on the right track. Don't give up. This is the practical side of the innocuous term, "some minor gunsmithing required"!

I shot it last month at my cas club’s BAMM/Cowboy match [14 shooters-7 of each] along with a 1903 Springfield that I had rebuilt from a bubba sporter. Ran the Mk3 before lunch and the ‘03 after lunch. Also used a pair of 1918 .45 Smith revolvers and shot them duelist. Was clean all day except for a ‘P’. I beat out our resident A shooter by less than a second. He ran a .308 Jungle Carbine and a pair of .38 Smiths that he shot 2 handed [modern]. We both used pump sg’s. We only had one 7 rd sg stage, all the others were only 4 rds. I had to do 3 extra reloads on that stage as my gun only held 4. My squashed .311 to .314 bullets worked fine. We only shot 5 stages due to the heat but had a good time.
