I remember reading a book written by a Canadian Officer who served on the Atlantic Convoys. One anecdote stayed with me. His ship was briefly straffed by a German plane. The ship was hit by only one 20mm bullet. The round hit a supply compartment which the ship's supply officer considered a Godsend.  It seems that every item that had been lost or stolen since the last inventory was in the space and was destroyed by that round.
