Deer season here starts in a week and this weekend I am going to the range to double check my rifle. Going to use my 1944 Long Branch No 4 Mk 1* as primary with my 1917 Winchester M1917 as a backup. I always take 2 rifles... Just in case... Ammo being used is the last of my South African PMP 174 gr soft point .303 and for the other PPU 150 gr soft point .30-06.

A_square, I will do my best to down one of the buggers for both you and my dad. Time for some retaliation!
Canuck, I just realized.... that buttplate on the Long Branch came from you... So I guess you are on the hunt in spirit |

Good luck Bear!
Our season opened Ist Nov. Got a 3 point (Western count W-tail) on 2nd with my chopped Ishapore. I'd seen a big buck with a doe, and these went into the bush here on the farm. went around the bush and waited, and this smaller one came out. As we're still struggling with harvest, I thought "Bird in the hand" and all that, as my days out might be very limited, so popped him. That same day I saw 3 different and bigger bucks! :-).............plus 3 bull elk but couldn't make out if legal. (could see forks at top of antlers, but not make out brow tines. Have to be 3 point here. Off out now for another look. Been trying to get hay and layed oats dried enough to pick up! Soft damp cloudy weather!!!! Linda's flowers still flowering in the garden! Richard.

Well it looks like I'm done for this year, unless I do look for a grouse or two.
Yesterday found elk tracks on the hay-land and in the bush, and saw 5 bulls but too dark to see if legal. Last night went for a shuftie, and just on dark saw five bulls on the hayfield again, and only about 150-170 yards off. 4 were backed by willow bush, so could not see if legal, but one out on field a bit further Was legal, (plenty of times!) Hard to see the open sights, but he only needed one shot from the old Ishapore 1933 with cut wood and 215 gr. Heard bullet hit, and watched through binoculars, as he turned a bit, twitched, and fell over. My son came out to help gralloch and skin him. It is now snowy and cold! Hit him in shoulder, as he was angling to-wards me pretty well, but not much meat damage as the old slow heavy bullets don't cause much hydraulic shock Never did get that last 30 nacres of oats picked up. Been a funny year! Here is a pic or 2. He was a 5 x 6. Last one this old rifle got was a 6x6 a few years ago now.

That is a nice beastie alright. When the bugle calls the old campaigners will answer with enthusiasm and show they have lost nothing of their ability against the young whipersnapers in fancy pants that have come along in the intervening years.

Nice one, Pukka! Wish my deer hunt would have been as productive. Last couple weeks saw a lot of deer but nothing came in close enough to shoot at. Fortunately since I have have a doe tag there is a special 8 day season in January so I will get another chance then.
