Whitjr. There are no markings below the bolt on a No4Mk1* Savage made rifle. This rifle, being a Savage, will only have the serial number stamped on the opposite side of the butt socket. Above and to the left of that will be a flaming bomb stamp,a square S followed by, No4Mk1*. Above and to the left of that will be the venerable U.S.PROPERTY stamp.

Mike. First off, ignore the scope and the cheek riser. The rifle pictured is my Savage No4Mk1*.
No british proof marks at all. Minus the scope and cheek riser, this is what your rifle would have looked like when it was assembled at the Chickopee Falls Massachusetts plant. The Parker Hale front sight was an add on after someone cut the barrel down on your rifle. The original wood on your rifle was cut down and sanded to fit the previous owners need as well.

I had a No 5 jungle carbine 30+ years ago. Recoil was a beast, however it was accurate. Had a No 4 mark 2 that I sold as well, about three years ago. Both rifles are rifles I miss, however it seemed prudent to sell at the time. I found a original stock for my No 1*** that I am working on. It was absolutely stupid in cost, so have passed on it. The guy in England I Emailed back and forth, knew what he had (he is a parts vendor just for Enfield). Wouldn’t come down on his price a’tall. My stock on the No1*** is beautiful, howevr not originally one that came with the stock. So... am going to keep that one, and be satisified. Below photo is my No 4 mark 1. Photo is upside down for reasons that are unclear to me. I use it for a woods gun when deer hunting. It is very functional, howeverno where near as nice looking as many No.4’s on this website. Goosic- thanks for the correction on the stampings! |

Mike: Five round magazines can be found on eBay every now and then. You can make one if you're so inclined to. The first photo you will see five, five round magazines. The first three from left to right are homemade ones that I made. The center one is an exact copy of a Parker Hale. The second one in from the right is a Santa Fe five round. The one one the far right is a brand new five round magazine from a company in the UK. They sell for 50 plus dollars. If I remember correctly, the website is riflemagsUK.
