Gent's; I was reloading a few hundred rounds of .45ACP at the weekend and made a mistake! I am using Winchester large rifle primer's; and I use Federal for Rifles now. But I had a box of Winchester Large rifle primer's on the same shelf as the pistol ones and did not read the box until tidying up. I have loaded around 80 rounds of .45 with rifle primer's!
so the question is: Is it dangerous to use these rounds! Should I pull the bullet's, de-prime and start over? The powder load is not heavy; I'm using 0.24 grammes of Vectan BA10 (which is a fast powder) under 230 grain CMJ bullets. |

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Dangerous no. May not fire every time will be the problem! LR primers have thicker cups (to withstand rifle firing pressures), so you may find the pistol won't have enough striking energy to reliably light them.

Yea, Rifle primers are harder !! Me and Sgt. Deshotels played around with Rifle and pistol , the biggest problem was the primers not going of in the pistols when using rifle primers !!

Thread on this very question over on the CMP forums. Some have used LR for years without problems, but likely depends on the pistol they are used in.

ive done the opposite and had no issue - not suggesting its a good idea but yes , i do understand what happened , with my light loads ive experienced no differene , no i would not do it intentionally , but then i load pistol rounds for both my rifles and handguns for cowboy , it was my 4570 that i had the large rifle primers for and i loaded all those correctly , i am far more careful now keeping both seperated in well marked containers with its own loading gear , i have two seperate priming tools these days as well as i hand prime everything ,

OK thanks. I will keep them for plinking the steel plates. I have some competitions coming up, so don't want any misfires during the "Vitesse Militaire"! The pistol is a recent model of the .45 by STI. it's a nice pistol. Hopefully it will fire them OK.

Yea, The time me and Deshotels did this , it was because he said they would interchange and we wanted to know if it would work, thats when we found the difference in the hardness of the LR primers .... We didnt go as far as seeing if the load stayed the same or not ...just noticed it took more strikes to set of the LR primers in a couple of our pistols .....

ahhhhhhhhh , the STI , i have wanted one of those , but can no longer justify , i can no longer compete at the three gun level , way to many young , fit , tallented shooters ,
not to say i would not plink in a competition i thought i might keep up in ,but way to much running and low ground shooting positions these days - i get down OK its getting back up that is the issue , still got my guns tho ......... besides i have all my three guns yet so if opportunity knocks i can stand
