I took the 7.62mm Enfield out yesterday to see what I can do with it standing up. I got drawn for mule deer this year and I intend to use it. Using a 12"×18" target and setting it out to 150 yards I put 18 out of 20 shots in the red.

Standing? Off hand? I'm very impressed! Those Mulies won't stand a chance! Great shooting!

The cold bore shot was dead center. If I have to use anything after that,I did something wrong. 168 grain Hornady  A-Max bullets sitting on 40.0 grains of Norma 202 powder seated into WLRM primed Lapua brass.  A couple of gentleman were teasing me about the Apple Jack coloring until I brought the targets in.😉

Goosic, you can beat out our countries best target shooters!  I  hope you don’t compete in matches I shoot at!  😊.

In the Standing position, very few can “hold the black”, meaning all 10 shots within the SR target 13 inch black 9 ring at 200 yards (6.5 MOA) with a vintage bolt gun.  Mind you, that’s with irons, but regardless, to be able to shoot a group this small in the off hand Standing position borderlines “unnatural”. Heck, most could not do this in prone with a sling.  What is the group center to center extreme spread?  That red center looks like about 3 inches, at 150 yards thats a 2 MOA group in the STANDING position !?????  Better than 99% of us can do in prone and might be a record score in Standing.

My cold bore shot hit dead center. The following six were all just above that. After that the barrel was hot and started dispersing the shots below the first shot in that seven shot group. Shots fifteen and sixteen hit right near to the number 9. The following and remaining four shots hit on the horizontal starting left of center, below and right of center, and two shots touching right of center just near the 9 ring.

OK, I was about right, a 3 inch spread at 150 yards in the Standing position?  2 MOA group.  Were you resting the rifle on a post?  That might be a world record.  You really need to get into competitive Vintage Military Match shooting Goosic, you will set new National records!  And, beat out all those guys with Springfields, M1917 Enfields, K31’s and others who think they are unbeatable!  Your recently built Long Branch No. 4 will be eligible for match shooting.

You again dispelled the myth that the first cold bore shot is outside the main group.

Half way through I ended up leaning against the fencing separating the benches, trying to simulate my leaning on a granite rock found in my general hunt area.  The range master was spotting for me and said the shots started spiraling starting from the 10 o'clock position after the sixth shot and progressively working outwards in a clockwise rotation. If I use this rifle for Mule Deer, that first shot is going to have to be the final shot as well...

if you really shoot like this, you won’t need a second shot.
