he!!o from the Deep South...
I've always liked Lee Enfields but only just now picked up my first... it's a 1944 Longbranch No.4 Mk1* that has spent some time on Bubba's kitchen table.
I don't plan on restoring it to its former as-isued glory, but I will definitely clean it up a bit, make some small changes and turn it into a decent hog hunting rifle.
First thing I need to address is the warped forend. It's bearing pretty tight against the right side of the barrel at the front. Depending on how bad the wood is I'll either replace it or tackle it with files and/or heat.
Then I need to take a look at the rear sight, and decide if I want to go with irons or stick with the S&K scope mount that's on it now. Eventually I will shorten the barrel, and if I do go with irons I'd like to put a nice barrel band front sight on it.
Here's a pic of it next to my other pig gun, a Ruger 99/44 Deerfield .44 magnum carbine.  I like that they have very similar lines. The Ruger is based on the M1 carbine/Mini 14 so it is itself a quasi-military design.

welcome to the forum!
Your Sporter looks like it could easily be returned to standard; seeing as the barrel is full length.
A warped fore end is not great though; hope you sort it out ok.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Is the forend actually bent, or is it just mis-bedded at the rear?
Its a 2-piece stock so it doesn't behave quite like a 1-piece.
The .303 is an excellent hog round with the right bullets hard hitting & deep penetrating, both good things for hogs.

Hi... yes, the rifle is not in such bad shape that it couldn't be remilitarized... however, this one's not destined for that... I will definitely be looking for a couple more variations to keep in their original configuration. Probably another No.4 and a 7.62 version of some sort. Along with that will be at least one Swiss K-31, and that should round out my collection. (So he said.)

@Shamu, I don't know yet how bad the forend is, hopefully it is not bent/warped and just needs proper bedding, I will check tonight.
I'm anxious to see how it does hog hunting. I could have just gone with the crowd and picked up a 300 Blackout AR but I'm just not a big fan of the platform. I guess I'm just old school. My go to deer gun is still an old Winchester '94 with buckhorn sights, or my even older Savage 340 30-30 bolt gun... also with irons. I also prefer to hunt on my feet, not sitting on my can in a blind... I'm excited to get this rifle up and running and out in the field.

Welcome to the Forum.

I used to still hunt in the Piney woods of East Texas.  I lived in Nacogdoches for a while not very far from LA.

A Squared, that Ruger is actually a 99/44 Deerfield, the latest version of Ruger's .44 Magazine Carbine. The action is based on the M1 carbine and Mini 14 action, but the stock, barrel and magazine are 10/22 on steroids. I wish Ruger still made these things.. they are great little bush guns. I've owned several 10/22s over the years, but right now my only rimfire is my old Marlin single shot that has been in my rack for about 33 years... it's nothing fancy but was deadly on snowshoe hares, ptarmigan and squirrels growing up.
@SW28fan- I love that Piney Woods country.... I've driven through there a few times. I'd choose to live there over the South Louisiana swamp country any day, but unfortunately I have to live where my work puts me...

Hi hoadie, I live in Lafayette, and work down in the Baldwin area.
I moved down from Alaska about 2 years ago.
How often do you have your meet and greets?

I discovered quite quickly that folks down enjoy their "Fests"... whether it be October or not... I've never been anywhere that held so many festivals.

Hot and humid is right... growing up between Alaska and Alberta got me used to that dry mild summer weather, and even drier winters... it was a pretty big adjustment moving here.

"Alberta winter dry"...more like : Dryer than a popcorn fart!!
Seems to me Stan (Rhino's "adopted" son) has some digs in Lafayette.

The good news is - with the Canuck dollar surging again - we just might make that trip down to Rhino's soon
