Hi,
I was wondering...., if not the 303, what kind of other milsurp caliber would you shoot and why?? The reason why I'm asking is just to have your point/feeling about your next favorite caliber. As far as I'm concerned, I have to stick with non semi-auto (new NZ rules) and my preference goes to those calibers that can be reloaded with the Lee Loader system....(primitive, archaic, call it the way you want, that's my preferred system), and there are only a few of them available nowadays....even the 8mm Mauser is not available anymore...7.32x54R, 30-30, 308, 30-06....that's basically what's left for me... So what about you guys?? Cheers Philtno |

Milsurp caliber for me is the 7.62x51 NATO round full length resized to .308. For me,it has the most bang for the buck possibilities from the 123grn up to the 180grn. I stay with the 168grn round though as that is my work horse target round.

.30-06 and 7.62/.308. .30 Caliber bullets are plentiful. As some would say, “God’s caliber”. Well, that might arouse some competitive spirit from those of us who are members of the British Empire, but, can’t deny it’s been a successful military cartridge...
I shoot the M1 and 1903 Springfield in .30-06 and No. 4 LE in 7.62. Eventually I’ll add a M1917 and M1A to my collection. But my best shooting Vintage Military rifle? Long Branch No. 4 Mk 1/3 in .303.

.43 Egyptian*.... .32 Rimfire* .... 50'70 Gov*. ... 7.62 Nato... 12.7mm Swedish*.
The ones marked * are Remington Rolling Blocks and use unavailable ammo. That's the attraction, having to make ammo that you can't buy from the shop.

I spent about 5 years loading for and shooting a commercial Mk III Martini Henry. This rifle shoots the .577-450 (a .577 Snider-Enfield base cartridge case necked down to .45 caliber). Cast 20:1 lead/tin 480 gr bullets from a custom made mold. Fg Black Powder. I could never quite get the level of accuracy I was hoping for, mostly I believe due to the limitation of the open sights. A friendly competition with other forum members using the B-17 target at 100 yards shooting prone, best 10 of 13 shots. A lot of fun.

I used to get loads of fun shooting my Remington 50/70 with a black powder load until a shattered right shoulder stopped the fun.

7.62x54R (lots of Soviet rifles which shoot it, lots of cheap ammo if you don't mind corrosive primers)
7.5x55 Swiss (K-31) 577/450 (Martini-Henry)

7.62/ .308 for me too, sorry I was thinking of earlier guns & loads when someone said "Milsurp". I'd love to try "7mm Livano" in the FAL though. That would possibly have been a true "Light Automatic Rifle" as Deiudonne Saieve envisioned it. |
