Hey guys! Mike Britton here from the DFW area of Texas. Always have had a SMLE "Big .30" in my safe!
I think they are great rifles, and have owned several. My current is what may be a Parker Hale Deluxe #4 built from a Savage #4MK1*
The mystery is that there are no British proof marks whatsoever, even though the ramp front sight is marked Parker Hale!
The barrel is the standard 2 groove barrel that Savage would have used, and looks like the day it left the factory. Serial # is 72C90xx The rifle is excellent overall and makes me wonder if it went to PH without having ever been issued!?
Sadly, the 5 round mag is missing, possibly one of the reasons I got a really nice SMLE sporter fr a $200 bill. I will keep looking for a 5 round, or eventually cut off a 10 round flush and weld a new base on, making it flush with the trigger guard.

Welcome from Phoenix Arizona.
I need to preface this by stating that if you can supplement some pictures for us to view, the id process goes alot faster. The only proof marks you will find on a Parker Hale Enfield will be, .303 2.222" 18tons per □"  on the barrel somewhere along with the words, Parker Hale Ltd. Birmingham England. There should also be an iron sight on the rear area of the barrel dove tailed directly on the barrel itself. Parker Hale  Enfield rifles usually  were built off of a barreled action. My dad has a PH Custom No4 that was originally a Savage and it still has the two groove barrel. Parker Hale  typically used barrelled actions still in the white and would supply their own serial numbers as well. If you could post some photos I should be able to assist you with this inquiry...

The first two photos are of fake Parker Hale rifles I made, one being a Supreme No4  the fancier one being a Custom No4.  The third photo is what should be stamped on the barrel of a real Parker Hale. Later Parker Hale rifles  will have the  word JANA  stamped on it.

Goosic,
Given your information, mine is not a PH. The only thing on the rifle marked Parker Hale is the ramp front sight. The configuration is the same as a PH Deluxe#4.
I am still at a loss however, as to how this rifle never got Brit proofs....Photos will come later.

SW28fan,
At the moment I have no outdoor range. I keep hearing bad things about the Quail Run range here in the Lewisville area, and have been mostly shooting indoors. The guys at the Eagle range in Lewisville tell me I am welcome to bring my centerfire rifles in there, but the idea of subjecting all the other shooters to a "big.30" inside is something I don't want to do.

Not having British proofs is fairly common. Particularly for the Savage made rifles.
If for example they were made by Savage in the U.S, & not sent to the U.K. then sold to a U.S. Dealer they'd never be in the UK & so wouldn't be UK proofed.
P-H made rifles, but they also sold all sorts of goodies (like sights) so its likely that a previous owner fitted the PH sight.
You can have a lot of fun indoors with a .303. Just use .32 ACP bullets & reload with about 10 grains of bullseye or unique.Confused

I should have asked if the rifle is still fully furnished with all its original military wood or, does it look like one of mine? It will not have any British proof marks because it was it was made in Chickopee Falls Massachusetts.  Unless it was sent directly to a plant in the UK or it went through a FTR, you will no ot have any British proof marks, just the normal Savage Steven's proof marks since it was made in the USA.The Parker Hale  front sight is more likely then not something that was added on by the previous owner and not by Parker Hale.  A Parker Hale front sight base on an Enfield will be sweated on and the actual front sight is identical to that of the No4 blade sight. Your serial number is the original  number. Parker Hale Enfield rifles started life with no serial numbers on them and came in the white either with just the receiver or a barrelled receiver.  In my opinion what you are describing is a rifle that was sporterized by the previous owner. Photos of this rifle would be greatly appreciated...

Yes you can, Mike.
There are a few limits though.
Resize them to "Large E-mail" to get the file size down
If not already make them .JPG
Then go to
USER CONTROL PANEL
>
FILE MANAGER
>
UPLOAD PICTURES / FILES
>
Browse to the folder, select, hit "UPLOAD".

To use them after storage:
Go to "POST REPLY" (NOT quick reply)
Click on the "tree" button" (post images)
Scroll down to file name & pick it. You can also preview first.

welcome , glad you joined us ,

i think the msarkings got scrubbed at the conversion , not all that uncommon , the serial number is savage and dates to 1943 so its not likely to have lounged around stateside ,

Nice looking.  Like the rifle mount too.  Could you post other closer photos as well?  Showing the stampings below the bolt?

Whitjr,
Thanks, I'm pleased with it. My first center fire rifle in high school, mid 60's, was a $15 #1MKIII that I bought out of a 55 gallon drum marked "junk" at a local gun store. It had the worst bore I had ever seen in a rifle, but shot surprisingly well. I bought some Bishop wood for it and shot the pee out of it!
I loved that old dog but promised myself that someday I would own a SMLE sporter in better condition, so I sold it. As soon as it left the table I wanted it back, so the search began for another.
Fast forward several years and several hundred gunshows and this Savage came along for the same money as the #1 I had sold! When I got back to the table and cleaned my new jewel I was excited to see an absolutely perfect bore, and very little use overall! All it needs is a 5 round magazine  which I will probably have to make, the Santa Fe's are non existent!
What this rifle is doesn't mean as much to me as what it represents. I have my Enfield back!
I have a safe full of rifles of all kinds, and a lot of them come and go, but I will always own a "BIG .30"!
The original rifles don't do much for me, they seem heavy, cumbersome. Same goes for the Springfield 03-A3, I like the sporters much better.
I'm off to work this morning, but I will try for some more markings later on this weekend.
  Thanks all, Mike

Mike. Your particular rifle is a No4Mk1* Savage that, someone has sporterized. It did not come with a five round magazine as well either. You have a nice rifle that did not leave the factory floor in that condition however. Take it out and shoot it...Thumbs Up
