Thanks for adding me!  I inherited a sporterized Savage Lend Lease No. 4 Mk 1* - and for some time have been planning to return it to wartime condition (not worrying about matching parts precisely).

When I lived in England I picked up an upper hand guard set - grooved SL N 74 marked which I now know = William Sykes Ltd. Yorkshire. I also picked up an NEC bayonet = Baird Engineering Company, Belfast.

Picking up again last year I picked up a SARCO wood set for the Forend so now I have an extra set of upper hand guards and buttstock. The SARCO upper guards are a better colour match but I like the grooved ones! I also picked up two original slings (NOS) one in Army Khaki and one in RAF blue.  Still need the barrel bands and am sure will need lots of help in future!

First question- how to date the rifle?  Serial number is 59C1540.

Thanks!

welcome to the site , glad you came here to join us ,

before you even think to start this worthy project please post some photos so we can help - there are many sported rifles out there - some can be restored and some can but are cost prohibitive , depending on your attachment you might want to just enjoy it as is , but we can only help if you post photos and answer some questions , we have folks here that are experts in both the restorations and the sporting of these ,

Welcome John. Your rifle was likely made in 1943. I have a 58C which was made in ‘43.  I don’t recall how I found that, might be in one of my reference books.

Does the serial number on the back of the bolt handle match that of the rifle?

Still have the 2 groove barrel? If a five groove, look to see if there is a FTR (Factory Thorough Repair) marking on the action body.

Pictures of the full length of the rifle would be helpful. Hopefully the barrel was not cut back.

Between June and July of 1943 is your build date based off of the serial number. ..

Yes the bolt serial number matches and no the barrel hasn’t been cut - bayonet lug still works!  Two grooves in the barrel. As soon as I figure out how I’ll post pictures.
Interim question - my replacement Forend has an “H” marking near the magazine slot - manufacturer mark? Thanks!

So another quick question for the group - the slider on the rear sight has come loose - the tiny spring seems to be detached - its there, but detached and the tiny bolt partially loose as well. Is this something repairable by a non-gunsmith or should I just get another one? (There is one on eBay that is less than my gunsmith’s $40
Min charge.  Thanks in Advance!

Look at the pivot pin for the lever.
If its worked loose, which it looks like it has, then the spring will flip out & no longer have tension.
The trick is to get the spring back in tension then push a replacement pin through the two holes in the frame.
