My cousin had given me an unopened box (48) of DI Z 1944 .303 ammunition which I shot at the range this past year. Shot pretty good. Anywho, yesterday being cold, I thought I would prep this brass to reload in the Man-cave. The brass was well lubed, but depriming seemed a bit more effort than normal. Aboot 15 rounds in, I bent my Deprimer pin. This happened to me many, many inexperienced years ago, and it was because I was trying to deprime Berdans! These are all Boxer. (Since the original incident, I have been using a thin tungsten rod for TIG welding cut to length with no issues.) Has anyone else ran into this issue? Thanks!

I've done it with a universal de-primer die when the case (I assume) wasn't centered in the she!! holder, never had a problem with an FL die though....apart from a couple of stuck 303 cases in Lee dies due to lack of lube some years ago.

I’m still using a handful of DI Z 1943 marked cases that were given to me many years ago. They were factory loaded when I received them and sold under the name of Belmont ammunition. Mine had a very heavy primer crimp in place. I recall having to use a considerable amount of force to deprive them. It also took a bit of work back then to remove the crimp in order to re prime the cases. I have a primer swagging die that makes easy work of removing primer crimps these days but had minimal tools back then. I suspect a heavy primer crimp is the cause of your damaged de priming pin.

I invested in a Lee Universal decapping die, currently on sale for $13.oo I don't decap on the Dillon, but it will work on there. I've never looked back with stubborn crimps. The "unbreakable" is true. It has a collet type locking nut so if the force needed exceeds the strength available it just slips! I did, because I'm me, replace the rubber "O" ring lock nut with a spare "clamp type" I have laying about. Its one of the only 2 Lee Dies I own, the other is the "Factory Crimp (pistol) die", which I use for .38Spl & .357 S&W Mag cases. ![]() |

I’ve decapped hundreds of DI ‘43 and ‘44 cases, maybe more than a thousand. Never had this problem.
Might be the flash holes are not centered on some of the cases or your decapping pin was slightly bent and the pin contacted the case head. That pin should be strong enough to punch right thru a primer cup if the crimp was holding it in place.

Pat The only time I have broke deprimer pins have been on crimped 30/06 or 308 brass military and some Lake City .223 And sometimes because I had the brass not in perfect alignment Do you know if they ever crimp 303 brass primer area’s ?

This wasn't but I noticed in a picture Goosic posted of some Winchester made military .303 it looked like it was. Mine has kind of a "ring" inside the primer pocket. I deprimed 50 fired PPI today with not a hint of an issue so I think the '44 stuff just had tight primers from age, etc. There was no corrosion or discolourment so I'm not positive.
