3 of my #4's have that metal insert installed into the aperture hole. It definitely helps improve aiming. ------------- Castles made of sand slip into the sea.....eventually |

These little silicone rubber inserts are actually seal for electrical cables on vehicle wiring harnesses. If you PM me your address; I can send you a few different sizes. You'll just have to make them black with a permanent marker (sharpie). as they come in different colours for different sizes. ------------- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice! |

| I have a few of these inserts. I find a thin sheet (.005 to 0.010 inch) of metal with a peep drilled to 0.05 inch diameter and epoxied to the sight lets more light thru than the insert. A lot of light is lost thru diffraction in these inserts, they are fairly long, but certainly better than the 0.10 diameter peep on the service sight. |

A national serviceman of the 1950's told me that he and his barrack room mates would block the aperture with soap and pierce it with a pin until they got the desired smaller aperture to classify on the range with. A small word of caution though for my fellow Brits; some twenty years ago during one of the bigger historical competitions at Bisley the RO noticed a glint of brass on the rear sight of a No.4 from one of the better shooters. My memory is a little dim but I believe he talked his way out of disciplinary action but his score was disallowed. ------------- Mick |

The stamped metal MkII sight that came originally on my French Resistance No4Mk1 has both the main and ladder sight openings at 0.0985" across. A good sight picture and legal for original issue Service Rifle Competition...

We are fortunate here, the CMP Rules allow for a reduced diameter aperture, although does not specify how that can be done. Installing a PH 6c 6 hole eyepiece would clearly be a violation, but affixing a thin sheet of brass (painted flat black of course) to the back of the Mk 1 Singer sight slide would not be considered a violation, nor would be adding a press in insert. I have found the thin brass sheet works best! I can see that SR(a) rules would very much frown on tampering with an “as issued” service rifle in an attempt to game the system…
