I recently acquired a WWI era Remington Model 10 shot gun and decided I would do a tribute trench gun.

Unknown to myself it would appear that this make of trench gun is the rarest of them with as few as 3500 produced by Remington for the US military with the lions share being Win model 1897`s.
The Rems are a scarce breed if looking for one intact. One sold last yr at RIA for a little over 14grand!

So far I`ve managed to track down a bayonet(P13/M1917) recently, the bayonet attachment piece, special order hand made replica, the proprietary wood heat shield/hand guard, the proper sling swivels and sling, and for sh!ts and giggles a minty 1905 Mills 25 round ammo belt.(that was pricey)

The Rems had a wood heat shield because Winchester held all the patents for their bayonet lug heat shield assembly's. There are no surviving wood heat shield that I could find other than those on complete original guns. These were thrown away after the war when most all the Remington trench guns were converted to riot guns.

So with lots of research and begging for close up pictures of original heat shields, and careful barrel measurements/plotting, I`ve been talking Jesse at Prestigious Wooden stocks and he`s agreed to make one for me, he was pretty cool about it and genuinely interested in the project.

The heat shield is pretty much the same as the upper rear hand guard for the P14/17 rifles with same slight variances, one being its 15+ inches long and with a longer deeper sight channel/notch/grove what ever you`d call it.

The Bayonet attachment is a 12-17 week wait and the wood will be a while as well, as Jesse is pretty swamped getting caught up from the Christmas rush and back orders.

Once I get all the bits the fun will begin, especially working the heats shield attachment bits.

Cheers

sounds fascinating , im looking forward to your posts with photos , i have an 1897 win and its been shortened for cowboy shooting , always thought it would be fun to have the trench guns bits for it but never got past researching the assembly instructions ,

i cant have them on it and use it for SASS so its not been a big deal so far but deep down inside id really like to have it - ill look forward to seeing your project come to fruition ....maybe it will inspire me , i do love shooting the 1897 , something about shooting a 111 year old piece of the past in competition that leads to a feeling of realism of that era , i will never be a competitor but its the shooting that satisfies

Yes old firearms are the best, I really enjoy shooting them as well.
A lot of the guys at the club don`t get it, they`d be lost without their shiny new plastic bling.

It`ll be a while, but most definitely will post progress pics.

I can’t wait to see your progress on this I think it’s a great idea that you taking on, I too look forward to seeing your pictures.
I don’t have any trench/Riot gun in my collection
I think it’s cool that you found someone that could make you a hand gaurd heat shield

My Great Grandfather was a U.S. Deputy Marshall in Maroa County Illinois.  His firearms of choice were a Schofield Model 3 and a Trench Gun like the one you have pictured. They were both gifted to his son in law, my grandfather. A week after my grandpa passed away, they both mysteriously vanished without a trace. A family member has them but refuses to admit it...

The Schofield is a nice piece of hand artillery.
To me its a shame when family won`t share history, I have relatives like that, I think everyone probably does..... Still it`d be nice to be able to see them and at least take pics.
On my fathers side, my cousin ended up with most all of my grand dads WWI service stuff including his parade uniform and medals, which included his MM, valor medal for conspicuous conduct above and beyond during battle, next highest to the VC. My cousin sold it all to support his drug addiction.
I always have my eye out for those medals, The MM has his name, date and battle engraved around  the edge, every time I see WWI medals come up for sale, I hope.

My Dad played it smart, he created a list of items that myself and three sisters could identify the “treasures” we want.  Top of my list is the No. 4 Mk 1(T).  Second is the Snider, third is the Martini Henry … you get the drift.

So the rest of the bits finally arrived the other day, bayonet attachment piece, and the swivels.
As you can see it turned pretty good.

The hand guard I ended carving myself as the guy I asked to do it for me bailed, its not the best but it`l do.
The sling is a Kerr no buckle but it`s the short version I need the longer version..Tongue

The bag hanging from the butt is the ammo pouch as carried by the `Trench Gunners`

That is really cool! You would just have to show it to a home invader to scare the s#*t of him!

Ya, with that bayonet attached it even scares me, sure gives it a long reach to say the least.

Now that this project is complete I`ll have to think of another to tackle. So much fun and enjoyment.

That trench gun came out awesome 👏
What makes it even more cool as you restored it up your self 😉

Great Job

Keep in mind this is not a restored Remington Trench Gun but rather a tribute to.
Build on a Remington Model 10 but from the early 1920`s, as hard as I searched I could not find a late 19-teens example.
It gives a visual of what the Dough Boys had to work with, all the trench guns were rushed into service and Remington had probably the smallest contract, with roughly 3500+/-

very nice , i like it , did you make all the parts ?

I made the upper hand guard and the metal bits to attach it, these are not available anywhere.
The swivels and bayonet attachment are made by Parts for antique guns, made to order in small runs.
I order these back in Dec 2021 and just received them late last week.

Real old? is it a 20ga is it a model1912 when these first came out they were only 20ga, when switched to the model 12 they were offered in 12 and other gauges.

If its a 12ga model 12, and not a 3" chambering, you can get conversion kits, these were WW2 trench guns/guard guns

It is old, 12 gauge and 2 3/4" . That's an interesting kit. Think they ship to Canada?

They sure do, that`s were I got my bits.
They`re taking orders now but its a long 16-20 weeks, as they`re all hand made and the runs are limited.
There are other kits out there, you`d have to do a google search to see whats what.

would love to have a bayonet mount like that for mine , did you make that or purchase it - if the latter where ?

Posted By: shiloh
Date Posted: June 19 2022 at 7:54pm
I had Parts for Antique Guns make it, this bayonet mount is specific to the Remington Model 10 shot guns as the Winchester system was different and they held patents and didn`t want to share.
