A less common Robert Mole and Sons 1907, made, June 1918 they made around 60,000 of these so not too common. Has both BSA and Enfield inspection marks, the X is a bending proof. The scabbard appears to be of Remington manufacture maybe 1917 as suggested by the 17 stamped on the leather. Not original to the bayonet but possibly reissued as such. Nice find. |

Not fully my field of expertise although before marriage I did have a decent collection of 1907 Pattern bayonets; possibly a bayonet for private purchase? Private purchase SMLE's are without the sovereign's cypher (and year of manufacture) and whilst your Mole is dated I just wonder if it was purchased by a "territorial" soldier. I have a friend with an extensive collection of 1907's bayonets, I'll ask him! Edited to add, I've just noticed the broad arrow on the blade so I suspect it may just be a Mole thing, I'll still ask him! ------------- Mick |

Here is the reply from my friend Michael mentioned above: "My example is marked 9 '15 and Mole with 1907 above that. Above those marks one can just make out the cypher and GR. However, the cypher and GR are very feint indeed and only just visible. The lightness of the stamping may be due to the die becoming worn and it may be worthwhile to have another look at the bayonet in question with a magnifying glass in bright light as I will be quite surprised if the cypher has been omitted altogether." I'd add "with diffused glancing light" to that! Like by a window that's shaded or on a cloudy day. swivel & twist the blade to "catch the light" too. Mole is one of the rarer ones , the correct nomenclature for yours is the Pattern 1907 , it is intended for the mkIII/III* rifles , yours having been made in 1918 was made as you see it , those made earlier would have had the Hooked Quilon [thats what my 1910 version has] but , a lot of the older ones had that hook removed mine is third from the left
