On this day (11 Dec. 1813) during the war of 1812 twixt them & us - 'Merican forces, after receiving resistance near what is now Hamilton, Ontario - decided to burn Virgil & Niagara On The Lake.(Their Commanding officer was court martialled later). So, in tit-for-tat retaliation British/Canadian forces set fire to the White House.(How'd that work out fer ya?  )That set a whole new bar for 1812 - 1815 events..everyone was burning everyone!! (The late Pierre Burton wrote a very good book on that titled: Flames across the border. Its a very good & informative read) Our forces probobly would have suceeded in burning the W/H down completely - but they forgot the marshmallows & smores, so they had to go back home to get 'em!  (Course, that gave the 'Mericans time to put out the fire & white wash the capitol building. Dang! They had ONE job!!  AAARRRGGHH!)------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

Growing up and living in Canada for my first 36 years, I learned one version of the War of 1812. After 27 years living in the US, I’ve learned another version of that history and it’s somewhat different! Just goes to show that history is often written with a bias and slant that is favorable to the side the writer is on. In the eye of the beholder as it were. While Canadians think it was about the US unjustly attacking Canada, the US thinks it was about Britain not accepting the outcome of the Revolutionary War and Britain thought it was an opportunity to relitigate the Revolutionary War. In reality, not much was decided or resolved by it and it took some years until the independence of the US and its boarders were finally settled. Today, we are all friends (well, for the most part anyway…). |

When the 'Mericans decided to invade what was to become Canada-they chose Upper Canada 1st, because all the British had here was 1,600 regular troops (of the 41st Reg't of foot) dispersed across the area.That was bolstered(sorta) by Canadian Militia groups being trained by them, & the indigeonous peoples. The Indians didn't side so much with the Brits out of loyalty..they saw them as the lesser of 2 evils. The 'Mericans were pushing ever westwards & slaughtering indians - so, Techumseh in particular managed to arrange a 1st Nations Confederacy to oppose the Americans because they could see what would happen if America won. Thomas Jefferson wrongly stated that the total invasion would only amount to "a mere matter of marching". At the treaty of Ghent the British vigourously argued for Indigeonous rights & property, but America wouldn't have it. Kinda cool, cause I livein the heart of 1812-1815 here. Quenston Hieghts, Stoney Creek, Ft.Erie, Ft.George(The 1 they named after ME!) & Battle of Beaver dams all right here. My Great, Great Grandfather fought & was wounded 2X.There was a cairn marker to him in center of Penatanguishene & he was awarded property & (I think) 20 gold soveriens for his service to the Crown. ...Considering Thorold South is where Niagara Region's lock-up is, I can understand why ya don't wanna go back! (Maybe keep ye nose outta trouble & ya won't hafta go back!!) Ya wouldn't recognize Pt.Dalhousie now..Lotsa condos on the lake / old canal. Legion got a huge knock-down re-do, Lakeside Park has new pavillion & piers out to lake have been re-built, boats now tie up right to the entrance of the old canal..& the Henly Regatta has all been upgraded so it's still bout the best rowing venue in the world. Rowing teams come from all over N.America to practice & compete. (Now if we could just get some COLD Jan / Feb weather again, they could bring back "Chicken Chuckin on the Henley! ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

Naw...ya form teams. you & yer team go out on the ice on the Henley (course, it's frozen over.) Much libation is liberally used to keep competitors warm. Then - kinda like shuffleboard & / or curling - your given some frozen chickens. Ya chuck 'em down the course to outscore yer opponets. When ya manage to out score a team you retire to the bar til yer next victim is announced, then ya brave the cold & do it all again. The generous use of libation will help keep the frosbite away(unless yer drinkin a "frostbite" - but thats another story) Teams came from all over: Chicago, Albany, North Bay - even Thorold South- if you can believe it!! I hear we're headed for another ice age now...maybe that will bring back CHIKEN CHUCKIN ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

Paddy - we don't use GEESE  They are a protected species..& they are a pain in Pt.Dalhousie. They overwinter there, & when yer drivin into "PORT" you will be frequentl stopped by Canada Geese on the road. They never seem to be in any rush, so they just meander all over the place..meanwhile traffic comes to a halt both ways. (Best hope it don't make ya late fer Chicken Chuckin sign-in! ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

Oh we get that in Hagerstown! The city park has a big lake & they just move in & nest to breed. The big goslings/young geese dont have a brain cell between them. Many's the time I've walked out of our vet's office, which is by the traffic circle & herded a huge mob of them back into the park so traffic can flow again!  ------------- Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. ..dang things are a pain in spring..they crap all over the golf course!! If your walking the course - yer feet & cart wheels will be covered in it!  . So, now I rent a cart..limits amount of goose crap on me shoes. They`re not, they`re just a huge pain as Hoadie stated. Not as much hunting them any more as in the past. Plus all the cityits coming north and buying farms and feeding them year round as pond pets, most just stick around all year. I read some where(ya right eh) that China has more Canada geese than anywhere else good on them if true. |

Goose (& other waterfowl) hunting is the major shooting pastime round here down in the flatlands. We get massive flocks during the migration the fields are all filled with them. As far back as the 80`s up here where I live, on opening day of migratory bird season, it sounded like a war zone, sun up to sun down and worse on the week ends. Its been in steady decline hear-a-bouts to almost nothing. I think mainly to the influx of city folk buying up everything and posting their new territory. I don`t hunt anymore, there`s no where left to do so safely. Or where I used to with blessings, is now all NO TRESPASSING /NO HUNTING!! We`re slowly being displaced..... My have to move to Alberta if they allow me  |

Luckily that's not happening here much. There's "The City", then 16 miles away, is "Town". The grockles rarely, if ever venture past the outskirts opposite the road to The City, for "Here be Draggones"   if you drive another 11 miles there's the turn of to our road, we're another 3 1/2 miles down that.
