 Project, Dads old P-17, really coming along with custom stock, barrel, brake and Timney trigger and magazine box mods to 300 Win Mag. Last issue to deal with is the pattern for the bases, I thought it was Remington 700 long action but no! Tried a one piece rail tonight and the bolt pattern does not line up, nor does the height. It's a BSA sporterized oringinally. Model 70 Winchester?

| Other stuff, MPI glass stock, blind floorplate to reduce weight, firing pin hole re-centered, new spring for the firing pin, Custom barrel by Bob Jury, new follower and spring. |

welcome to the sight , the "P" is for pattern - the commonwealth contracted the Pattern 14 rifle thru remington , winchester and eddystone for their pattern 13 rifle in 303 to supplement the enfield production , after these contracts ran out the US was looking to supplement the springfield production so had these three companies retool for 3006 and called it the Model 1917 , this makes the rifle an M17 - NOT a P17 , nomenclature is important , after the first war a lot of these got rearsenaled , stored and were reissued in WWUU , the robust action of these rifles lent themselves to a lot of sporting conversions , it appears you have a nice one ,

| OK so from what I gleaned, M-17 got it, thanks, it was bought by my grandfather from a store long ago in Alberta, and it was sporterized already by BSA, originally in 30-06. When I got it from my father in '86 it was a bit of a disaster, fixed it, had it re-blued but it did not shoot, noticed the stock was cracked, tried to repair that and a gunsmith noted there was some damage in the rifling. So begins the restoration of grampas rifle, (not a desecration of a war classic LOL) with some serious upgrades and some fun building the old classic. It is almost done but I am having the scope base holes bored out to 8-40 as two of the 4 existing are stripped. I guess that why the question regarding the contour of the machining for the scope bases, I have heard there are about 4 x that were used and I know it is not the Remington 700 as I tried a one piece base, and the heights are very different. |

it would be hard for us to guess what things look like now , these had a distinctive reviver as made but your photo indicates it was often modified when sported and we have no idea what or whos barrel is on it anymore - top two are M17s and the bottom is a P14 |

If it was already sported by BSA no harm done. You've essentially built an updated Remington Model 30 No plastic or alloy parts and a safety catch that is reliable and accessible; what's not to like? ------------- Treason doth never prosper; what's the reason?
