Just ordered 8 lbs of N140 at $330 and 8 lbs Varget at $440. That’s the most I’ve ever paid for Varget. VV comes from Finland and Varget from AU.
You guys in Australia, how much to you pay for ADI AR 2208? I know that’s a long way to ship powder half way around the world to the US, but a $100 premium for ADI powder seems like a lot.
I miss the days of $130 for an 8 lb jug of powder…and I thought that was expensive!

Geoff, 8lbs of N140 is currently $442 (£348) over here...when you can get it in 8 lb containers which isn't that often. I lt tubs are available at $147 (£116).

Mick, that’s pricy if you have to buy the N140 in 1 lb bottles!
I now regret not buying two 8 lb jugs. I’ve got the better part of one jug left, plus one on the way. I currently only use N140 for the .223 Service Rifle 600 yard line load with 80 grain MatchKing, goes together just like peas and carrots. I’m using H4895 with 69 grain SMK for the short line (200x and 300x). Not seen any H4895 available in the US in a while now.

$100/lb + tax(13%) last time I checked, said nope aint worth it. 3031 is currently $75/lb. These are local prices. I`ve stopped buying powder, can no longer afford the luxury.

I know this is an old post but I am interested to see current US prices.
AR2208 / Varget is currently $140 AUD for 1kg or $430 AUD for 4kg
Equals to about $92 USD for 2.2lb and $280 USD for 8.8lb respectively.
Dario is correct, there is an international push to take guns away from the general public. Here, they are talking about limiting us to 10 firearms for competition/recreational shooting. Fortunately, they are not looking to limit those on our collectors licenses but those are not permitted to be shot.

Not an old post, I just sent this out today, so this is the current US prices on Varget.
Retail AR2208 prices in AU are $280 USD for 8.8 lbs, much less than here in the US. So Hodgdon has a significant markup on Varget as its retails here for $440 for 8 lbs. There is shipping and repackaging costs, but Hodgdon likely purchases the powder in bulk from ADI at half the retail price in AU, perhaps $20/lb, $160 for 8 lbs. Then it passes thru multiple hands to get to the retail US market, all ratchet up the cost. Just speculating here…

I’m sure some of this unavailability and high price problems we face is due to the large demands put on the powder suppliers from the government. Millions, if not approaching billions, of rounds of small arms ammunition is being consumed in the Ukraine. I can live with that, but what concerns me is the concerted efforts by some in the government to price ammunition and reloading components so high that we can no longer afford to shoot.

I've just read that Finland is to pause production of ammunition for Ukraine due to strike action at some of it's factories which include the Vihtavuori nitrocellulose plant. The reason behind the strikes is said to be proposed labor reforms by the Finnish government.
If it wasn't difficult or pricey enough to buy N140 in the first place...

Hodgdon has Varget in stock: 1 lb. $62.71 8 lb. jug $437.91 and that doesn't include $51.73 shipping or $36.12 tax for a total of $530.03 for one 8 lb. jug!!!!!!

I got the 8 lb jug of Varget and N140 from Midway. Shipping was $19 and Hazmat $23. I had a few other things with the order, total tax was $53. GA State and county tax is 7%, so another $31 tax on the Varget.
The Varget was actually $448.99, it may be coming in eight 1 lb bottles. I found it a bit cheaper elsewhere, but they didn’t have N140, so would have had to pay two shipping and Hazmat fees.
Hope Hodgdon sells H4895 again. It’s the best powder for light bullets in the M1 and 03 Springfield.

Three main things determine the final cost of anything:
Cost of materials Cost of labor Profit
I'd like to know which of those three has jumped 300% in a few short years.

Don’t forget cost of shipping and taxes. They never go down…
You can bet increasing profit is irresistible when the demand exceeds supply. The only way prices will fall is if we all stop buying powder.

Natchezss had free hazmat a couple of weeks ago. I ordered two pounds of varget. $52.99 US each plus $23.56 shipping and 9.07 tax (MS). It was still cheaper than me driving to the nearest place to me that carries powder, if they even had varget.

Too many people that are well above being financially stable as well as not caring to allow that to happen today. Many years ago, I was part of a group of Long Haul Truck Drivers with dedicated runs out of all the ports in Long Beach California. 335,000 plus drivers shut our trucks down for 3 days to attempt to do something similar with dropping prices. The problem was that the other 13.5 million drivers at the time got scared. If those wheels ain't turning, you aint makin' any money and company drivers were being replaced with "Slip Seat" drivers so product kept moving. The drivers that shut down kept dozens of Container Ships stationary at multiple locations but, after the 72 hour shutdown, the remaining drivers shrugged it off and started moving "Freight of All Kind" once more. In the end, it didn't matter. Big business never got scratched. The majority of drivers that shutdown were given the choice to turn in their respective trucks and look for gainful employment some place else or stay in the truck and continue to driver but at a substantially lower pay grade however. Gun Powder, Primers, Bullets and Cartridge Case prices will steadily increase. Alot of people not willing to wait it out and sit on their hands...

Was in my preferred gun shop yesterday and discussed this very topic. Stock over here is limited to the 1Kg (2.2lb) bottles. The 4kg (8.8lb) jugs are not currently available.
