THE PAST ,

specifically sayings and cliché phrases , but that got me to thinking of things from the past ...........

so as a young kid my grandfather showed me his spats - i was interested , my grandmother showed me her button top shoes , seems they kept things around much as we do these days , she showed me how the button hook worked and he explained that the spats kinda went with the zoot suites even tho they were more deadily accepted , and that reminded me of things that were a trend and not readily accepted ............

so i recall in my freshman year of high school in our school [flyover state] that the guys had decided to continue wearing their penny loafers but without sox .........i never quite understood the problem with that trend , but i was wearing mine soxless , oh and i kept dimes in mine so i always had change for the payphone ,
but , the admin decided that was forbidden , we were given an ultimatum to wear sox or risk expulsion , the student body decided that was not acceptable and everyone showed up that friday without sox , no one got expelled and it never came up again , one fellow in my speech class actually gave a speech on it and personal rights , this was fall of my freshman year so it was my initiation to the new school ,

little did i know that was a very minor beginning to those experiences of the mid 60s , a trivial thing today , but important in those times of racial adjustments , VN war protests and so many other new things ,

Were "Beatle Boots" a thing in the U.S. in the mid-Sixties?  In Canada if you didn't have Beatle boots you weren't cool.

Known as "winklepickers" in the UK, I recall my mother flatly refusing to buy me a pair!

Beatle boots and bell bottomed pants! Paisley shirts were also the 'in' thing back when I was a teen in the early 70's.Then in the latter half of the 70's the cool thing to wear were jeans and jean jackets and square toed 'Dayton style' boots.

By "square" Daytons, can I assume you're talking aboot the ones with a brass ring and a stirrup type thing on them? If so, they were so cool but we couldn't afford them. I'm my neck of Canada, they were called Civil War Boots!

A little background on "Beetle Boots".
They were originally sold as "Beatle Boots" because the group "The Beatles" wore them & made them popular. Then they sued for copyright because of the deliberate misspelling of "Beatle"!
Yep Winlke-Pickers! Named after the marine snail delicacy where you had to "Winkle them out of the she!!" with a pointy object called a "Winkle Pin"!

I still have deformed toes a bit like Chinese foot binding, caused because I wore them with 2" "Cuban Heels"

I passed my boots on to a younger sibling and who knows where the boots ended up.

I shall always remember the boots with a smile.

Never wore paisley shirts always t`s or denim wrangler shirts. and still do.
I also had the square toed cow boy boots with stirrup straps. Re heeled and soled probably 3-4 times. All I wore through high school, my all weather shyte kickers.

We also had the local cobbler nail metal protective plates on the heel and toe to help prevent wear.  We called them "Blakies" and loved clicking around the neighborhood like soldiers with hobnailed boots.

Looking back to the 60's I recall the Beatle generation turning into Mods & Rockers, the Rockers remained much the same but the Mods tended to morph into other things starting with "suede" heads which quickly became skinheads.
I was an army skinhead when I met Mrs. Strangely Brown but after leaving the services it became a bit longer circa 1974.

To remind my colonial cousins this is what a feral skinhead of the period looked like.

I went to a hockey tournament in St. Louis in '72. We were told we needed suit and tie. Mom bought me a three piece corduroy "burnt orange" suit, satin flowered shirt, orange velvet bowtie the size of two baseball gloves and platform saddle shoes. Man, I thought I was stylin...!

Very appropriate!
Jason King, or rather Peter Wyngarde to give him his real name was a keen shotgunner who enjoyed pheasant shooting in Essex in his later life.
I believe he was also a keen pistol shot before the UK government did the dirty on us.

I no longer acknowledge the UK government.

It does not represent the People of the UK.
