| China has always been the biggest threat to world peace in recent times. That's what happens when you give one country a monopoly on supplying goods a world needs. Hopefully their military hardware is just as good as their Temu products! |

Paddy; It's like the old WWII Russian idea. Make it cheap, make it work, & make a S"I& ton of it to swarm your enemy.(Tanks especially) WWII Stateside. Kaiser was turning out cheap "Liberty Ships" faster than anyone could sink 'em. Ergo, the adversary was overwhelmed.(& every G.I. was able to get a bottle of Cocca-Cola for 5 cents no matter where he was!) ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

I think Hoadie has hit the nail on the head here. It was the industrial might of the USA that saved the UK, prior to the US military joining in the fighting. The U- boat threat was beaten by smart British technology and the number of ships that US Naval yards were building. Plus the tanks, trucks and jeeps used in the North African campaign. The Eighth Army couldn't have beaten Rommel without the equipment! Not forgetting the Aviation factories. ------------- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice! |

One small correction Zed, it was Canada's CMP's (Canadian Military Pattern) series of lorries that motorized the British Army. The British 8th Army fought almost exclusively on CMP transport. In fact, in the U.K.'s official "History of the Second World War" Canada's war time production of 800,000 soft-skinned trucks and 50,000 armoured vehicles such as the C15TA and 'Kangaroos' is considered the most important contribution to Allied victory. I don't think there was a single Allied country that didn't, at least in part, run on CMP's. |

Apologies for the error! Yes Canada was also a major player from the start of the conflict. We have a lot to be thankful for. In France the appreciation of the sacrifice is well respected. Memorials for crashed allied airmen are scattered around the country side. There are a few in our region. ------------- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice! |

When the war broke out Canada had to build the factories first...& in record time! Then, they were staffed mostly by women. They did an amazing job!  ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

| Zed great point except the British 8th army was made up of predominately commonwealth troops Canada, Australia, New zealand,India, Poland etc …. And these troops handed hitters his first defeat of ww2. My grand father’s nephew was awarded the VC at Tobruk John Hurst Edmondson . There was so many technological and military advancements done in this time period . |

Due to British naval activity in the Mediterranean Rommel's supply lines were cut. It was very difficult for supplies & replacements to get to him. 60% of his vehicles (including armour) was captured British equipment. ------------- Loose wimmen tightened here |

Yes, if the Kangaroo was an altered (defrocked, as they called it) M7 'Priest' that had a ring mount for an MG, they kept it. The Kangaroos made from converted Shermans, Churchills, and Canadian Rams kept their bow machine guns. The whole idea behind the Kangaroos was not for them to be scout vehicles but to safely transport troops forward so they could engage the enemy at close range without the losses from moving forward on foot. There weren't enough Universal carriers or M3 half-tracks to meet the demand so Canadian Lt. Gen. Guy Simonds came up with the idea of removing the guns and ammunition storage from the many unused M7 Priests languishing in motor pools. Many of the Kangaroos were up-armoured above and beyond their already substantial armour which greatly increased the protection of the troops within especially when compared to the thin armour of the Half-tracks and Universal carriers.
