I usually use map & compass ifI go wandering about, but I recently got a basic GPS hand-held & have been testing (read fiddling) with it.
The unit is a Garmin e-trex.
So to the questions.
WAAS enabling or not?
I've had very opposite (& firmly held ) opinion about wether it should be ON, or OFF.
Those who say ON say the advantage is better pinpointing of location.
Those who say OFF say it's mainly for air nav. & if I have it ON & the sats aren't up then it'll degrade info.

All of them seem to have an ALLWAYS ON, or ALLWAYS OFF solution, is it practical to toggle it ON/OFF, depending on the sat. constellations.
What sayeth the users here?

Second dumb question.

If I switch the coordinate system after data is entered will the unit switch existing waypoints, or just store then with differing datums & find 'em anyway, & if it does will they still be accurate within the limits of the original information?

The idea is to enter remotely waypoints to locations I haven't been to, using different datums, (because I don't seem to have a choice) & then switch back afterwards.

It's still mostly going to be map n' compass for me, but I figure that a cross check won't hurt. A check ride in some wooded areas round here raised some questions though. I know terrain can mess with GPS reception, but I really wasn't expecting moderate tree cover to do such a job on it.
I'm getting pretty familar with the area now, & that helps. But the motto of "In the Ozarks no-one can hear you scream" Shockedis a factor too.

Answered my own question, I think!

I switched datums input the data & switched them back.
What a huge pain in the TuchusThumbs Down

Now all I got to do is wait till September when I get there. If it worked I'll be neatly led to the campsite on the shore of the lake.
If it didn't I'll be swimmingErmm in the lake.
