So what with this barrel????  The receiver has been shaved and the socket ground to a fine markless shine.  Looks like a barrel Splice?????  Oh and extra points for the type of Scope mount

My guess is a seperate piece slipped on and possibly soldered in place.Splicing at that point seems unlikely and definately dangerous.

Also...besides my silly post above....the bbl looks larger after the "knuckle"...have you slugged it out?
It may be some half azzed attempt at turning a .303 into a REALLY tight 30-06....just saying....
Scope mount....my money is on weaver.

From the dovetail cut in the collar I expect it was simply put there to provide a high enough point to mount an open sight on the barrel without cutting a dovetail or DT'ing the barrel, plus allowing use of a rear sight meant for mounting on a rifle that did not require that it sit up high to allow a clear line of sight.
If so its not a bad expediant, though it could have been finished out a bit better.

Optical illusion, the forend is sanded down more in front of the collar exposing more of the barrel, plus the rear of the barrel is shaded by the scope. If something is darker it looks smaller.

LE is right, there was a v-notch blade sight there, refer to my other post.  This rifle was and EAL production 303.  I'm doing a lil more research into I'll post some of my findings.
