Greetings all, I recently got this 1918 Enfield. I believe it's a No. 1 Mk III*. I really can't discern much else from the markings. Here are some pictures of the markings and of the entire rifle. I would like to put the original military stock on this rifle. If anyone knows of any place where I can find one, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Paul.     |

Numrich (e-gunparts.com), Sarco, or Springfield Sporters are the most likely sources for stock parts. | And yes, your rifle is a No 1 Mk III*. When you do get the wood, make sure to read up on fitting it to the rifle. It is something that needs to be done precisely to get the longest life out of the wood and the best accuracy out of the rifle. |

Cool, Thanks guys. Any Idea of who the manufacturer was? I believe it may be BSA as the serial no. "2098" is within their range of serial numbers, but there are no engravings or stamps that would positively say who made it. |

no , they would not , they will be marked as to the originator such as BSA co , LSA etc     |

| Thanks for the clarification. Are the rifles made in the Enfield plant any more or less valuable than those made by other plants? Any Idea on how many were made? I'd like to find out as much info as possible. Just retired from the army and am now pursuing a career in gunsmithing. I know tons about modern day firearms, but almost nothing about pre 1950's tech. |

you may want to pick up some referance books , IMHO none are better than another , its all the condition of the rifle and what you happen to like , i happen to have mostly BSA in my early rifles with a smattering of the other mfgrs , i happen to have mostly FAZ in my later rifles but i have had the others and still have LBs |

I would agree, I personally dont believe one manufacturer is better than the other.
It was generally felt among target shooters though, that the SMLE's made between the war years were of a better quality as the factories were not under pressure to turn out rifles. I have also seen this said about the North American No4 rifles as the factories producing them were not being bombed. That said, my preference is for the English No4's.

| Cool, thanks for the info. This is my first Enfield, it was given to my by a family member who can't see iron sights very well these days. Anyway, as I said in my earlier post, I plan on restoring it to it's original military configuration. I'm not much of a fan of sporterized service rifles. |

The wristguard stamp of "ENFIELD" means it was manufactured by Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, UK. The date is the date it was made. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the "cap" tip off. I need to proof my posts instead of just posting them. Glad to hear that you got all the info you need. When looking at your serial number, do not forget the letter, it is important to include since there are other "letters" out there with the same numbers as yours. I believe you also have some "military unit" designation marks, which I cannot make out in your pictures. Good shooting!
