The Victorian government, and the CSIRO is doing a study on these monster feral cats or "penrith panthers" as they are sometimes called.

I would love to shoot one of those bloody things.

Nice, but how big was it actualy? with the hunter standing in the back ground its hard to say how big it really is. this is just like the ferral hogxwild hog killed in georgia on Ken Hollyoaks property, and if you went by the measurments on the picture the guy that shot it should of stood at least 9 feet tall.  but then they did a piece on the hog and nick named it Hogzilla. Both Ken and the Guy that shot the hog contridicted each other on film when the remains were measured.
I would like to see a meter stick/Yard stick put up against the animal in such a way that the photo could not be alterd.

Allegidly, and i say Allegidly this thing was 1.5 meters from head to the base of its tail, and weighed 35 kiligrams.

There are feral cats commonly shot in the bust that are about a meter from the end of the rear legs to the head when hung out, and easily weigh 6 kilo's.

Im sure dave can back me up on that one.

The things have been running round in the bush for 200 years evolving all the time, and they are top of the food chain because there is nothing else to oppose them killing everything in sight.

Hold on im going to do some measuring,
Things needed: One of the wifes cats.
                       : my tape measure.
: some one to hold the cat  in a hung out position.
but first im calling my buddy, he is a veterinarian and pass this question of a feral cat getting to this size. now i used to have an old tom a few years ago that weighed in at 16 lbs and his head was the size of a bob cats skull, Doc. compared them. he has a bob cat skull. but 1.5 meters long???
only if you mean fully stretched maybe,
this is measurments from my Wifes favorite tom cat.
Ok 16inches from back of the tom cats head to the base of his tail, 36inches from paw to paw while hung from back feet, and 32 inches from hind feet to tip of nose.
And he is not an extremly larg house cat. so ya gotta know where the measurements are taken and how.
and by the way i have seen big foot... Oh Yea! she works out at exxon refinery pretty close to my office! she even growld at me for cutting through there area one morning.

Well guys, my Wife said as for the length, it is more believable depending on how you are measuring. BUT the weight is highly questionable because a feral animal is not likely to be obese and for the length it had to be obese.  but i will let you know what Doc says tomorrow.

You GOTTA be from the "Show Me" state!
Look K...if theres Sasquatch, why cant there be "Catzilla"?
I mean -after all-down under has different EVERYTHING! Even they're dinosaurs were different!(Just look @ Dave's picture, for confirmation.)
I bin hearing -off & on - bout reports coming outta there bout this same thing. Now someone has bagged one.Lets get it measured & have a celebration!!
Here in Niagara, we've had reports of the same thing for a few years now.The tracks & sightings suggest Felis Concolor(Cougar, Puma, Mountain Lion,Panther) No one has caught one yet...But last year the SPCA & Police observed one RIGHT BEHIND RIDLEY COLLEGE in town, here!! But no further sightings this year, so far.

Naw not from there but my Dad was born in Joplin then they moved to Wichita,KS  And i seen my big foot and man was she big, We have to go through her to throw our oil contaminated garbage away. man am i glad i can send my Men over there and I dont have to go to her office no more.

Well Hoadie, its not that i dont believe that there are feral cats but the size is what stumps me. Having a Wife that is a Vet. Tech. and her boss is a good friend of mine and also knowing a bit about animals, I just cant believe a feral cat that size from what i seen of the picture. it just doesnt look in proportion to the other things in the picture.

Yeah i agree that is a dodgy pic, but the government is taking it seruously.

But here is some food for thought, also about 200 years ago pigs were also bought to Australia and some were released or escaped between now and then.

Any way there are  heap of pig muscly angry feral pigs with tusks and a ridge of hair that pretty much stand on end (hence the name Razorback) that have evolved from your regular farm pigs like the tamworth and berkshire pigs that were sometimes interbred with asian pig species.

If a farm pig can turn into that I think that is is plausable that you can get big feral cats.

And dont get me started on dropbares....

the farm pig will revert back to the wild faster than any domestic animal, we are talking about something growing beyond its normal size, but like tony said it takes time and natural selection in the direction of size. like getting bigger or smaller. and also taking a proper picture helps too.

Hatchetman,
We have puma on my property. They can weigh over 200 pounds. One followed me around once while I was checking on the property. I saw the tracks in the snow when I returned along the same path I walked out on. Since the snow was still falling, it couldn't have been very far behind me.Shocked

Hoadie,
That might be true, but we have several pumas in town, they've been seen in the daytime in people's yards. Quite a few dogs have been killed. I don't think these cats are that skittish.

Posted By: hoadie
Date Posted: May 12 2009 at 8:26am
1 on 1 a dog(usually teid,as well) under normal circumastances wouldnt be much of a match against a mountain lion.,outwiegh,outreach,outbite.
Normally they are nocturnal.Now-if they're habitat/food sources are under duress-so are they.
They may take a target of opportunity...but they dont like to be around man.
There HAS been a case or 2 over the years of a starved & nearly blind cougar has gone after a small child..but that is an extreme rarity-not the norm by ANY means.
The town would be better off to try to trap & re-locate these cats.
There is mounting evidence HERE that we may have a few returning to the province..but @ this point it seems inconclusive. Not sure if its exotic pets released/escaped..or natural return.Getting livestock with the classic attack marks..& even a case of positive DNA

Actually it illegal to shoot them here. It's just that these critters haven't developed a mortal fear of humanity yet, and to have them running around town in broad daylight is not reassuring.

The big cats HATE being around man...but given enough time with people FEEDING them-they're stomach will over-rule their better instincts.
Trust me..normally they avoid man like the plague(& rightly so..)Cause whenever their paths cross,it ALWAYS ends up badly for the cat. That usually born out of IGNORANCE & stupidity on man's part.

Thats so true Hoadie! Man is the only mammal on earth that hunts for fun or profit.  Yeah I shoot but most of what I shoot we eat the only animal I shoot and we don't eat are foxes and thats only when the farmers ask for them to be thinned out. The most sickening sight I ever saw was back in the 80s we had a real harsh winter and the hind cull was due. Poor sods were so starved they couldn't run away and basically the shooter could near enough walk up to them and administer a mercy shot. The tractor came back with 9 hinds on the trailer and all of them were badly emaciated.

Tony had that Hind herd been managed before the winter there would not have been all that starvation, I try to explain that to all these anti hunters that selective hunting is better that a slow death by starvation or disease

The big cats here are getting pretty bold on the island there has been and increase of cougar attacks in more populated centers as the god dammed hippies are feeding the deer in there back yard so they never leave town, and they are inbred lil bastards so they are smart like truck.  so now the cougars are coming into to town to eat the easy meal.

that aside I'm with CM on the selective hunting, however the people in our country don't seem to manage it that well, just my opinion I'm sure Hoadie has a view about how they run it back east.  they seem to overdo it so things begin to get out of hand like the wolf population right now.

THATS hillarious...& probobly not too far from the truth!
We are going through a similar problem right now with Wolves.Hunting them has been banned in and around Algonquin Park for sometime now.The gov't has spent scads of $$ on these "experts" who advise them of the #'s,health, range etc, etc.Things started to go wrong just recently when the gov't finally noticed how much they bin payin out in livestock damages(course they wouldnt listen to the people who've bin screamin)They started to finally ask questions..& private folks got involved.Guess what?We now find that the #'s are WAY more than these "experts" bin claiming...& the range is far wider than they bin sayin..& they're HEALTHIER than they bin sayin(cause they bin gettin prime livestock!!) Well- the spam is hittin the fan now..Just shows ya-NO dept of ANY gov't can be trusted with MONEY, COMPETANCE,AUTHORITY,or even GOODWILL.

I recon they must have moved over here Shamu. Word has it some idiot is planning to re introduce wolves back into the UK! Great!!! The tourists will be "Oooooooooo look at the doggies lets give em a feed!" or " You sit with the doggies junior I'll take your photo!". Farmers will lose livestock and then some tourist will get attacked and all hell will break loose.  We haven't the space to accomodate predators. Scotland is wide open moorland with towns and villages scattered around intersperced with farmland it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

WTF? Beavers, they were never native to the UK.
The big topic was the change beavers make to the environment by damming fast flowing, shallow streams.

Maybe the "grand plan" is to have the wolves predate the beaversConfused
