Yaeh call me biased but I have to admit when it comes to a bolt
action The enfield has nothing to be ashamed of ! It helped to control
a empire & then a Commonwealth for a lot of years !

I have a huge amount of faith in the Enfields. They have always hit whatever I'm aiming at, and have never malfunctioned. But then again, since an Enfield was the first rifle I ever owned, I'm probably biased as well!

It was once said back in the day: "The Springfield is a target rifle, the Mauser is a huntin' rifle, but the Enfiled is a battle rifle."

Hey, thanks for the praise. I wanted to have a place that all Enfield lovers could hang out. After the unfortunate passing of Mark Bitting, britishguns.net went down. I was hoping to be able to revive britishguns.net, however, after contacting Mark's lovely widow, we were unable to get things worked out. So, this was the only other option I had.
I plan on adding more pages to the site, it's just slow coming. I just purchased the forum software license from the programmer the designed it. You may have noticed that the google adds are now missing. I couldn't wait to get the license so I could get rid of those gosh-for-saking adds! I just had to make sure there were going to be enough people using the forum to make it worth while.
Oh well, I'm at work and it's almost 12:00 midnight! My brain is fried. We had our main Domain Controller go belly up late today and I have the unfortunate luck to rebuild it. So, as you may have guessed by now, I'm VERY tired and am rambling on.......
GOOD NIGHT!!

I do love the Enfield, it is a good shooter that looks real sharp and has a real cool history.. But I must say that one can not just blow the M1 off.. 30.06 is a great round!

you cant really say which is best because really when it comes down to it when the bullet comes out of the barrel and hits some one, they all do the same thing.
so i think that you have to sum up the performance of each ex miliratry rifle.
the Enfield (in general)
* fast smooth action, detachable box mag, 10 round capcity, 2400fps muzzle velocity.
German Mauser (and other countries that copied it with the same caliber, ie turkish, austrian.)
*2800fps muzzle velocity, most acurate rifle, solid bolt.
Russian Mosin Nagant
* 2600fps muzzle velocity, peasent rifle.
Japanese arisaka
* 2400fps muzzle velocity.
these are in no ranking order, but i do say that the enfield tops the lot because although it is one of the slowest, 10 round capacity just means alot more shots at the enemy in a quicker time period, as well as it having the smoothest bolt.
best modern military rifle?
Kalashnikov, no doubt. bury it in sand, throw it in water, run over it with a truck, throw it off a cliff, it still works, so without a doubt the best rifle ever made. so when you think of it an army of pure untrained soldiers can use this and hardly have to maintain it.
after all that happening to it it isant as accurate but still packs a punch.

Hey Dunno look up any data you can find on the German MP44 (it makes
one really think about the origans of the Klashnikov ) Having been shot
at by people armed with these I can agree they are idiot proof ! But I
feel that as they fall into the class of a assullt weapon ,they are are
only a intermediate cartridge not a Full blown Rifle ...They fall
into the Grey area between Submachine guns (a ammo hungry chatter
box that runs dry just as the situation becomes truley interesting )
& the full blown rifle round that comes into it's own for presise
long range shooting (which also tends to run dry as the situation
becomes really interesting )

i am sure that the AK 47 is 7.2x51, standard NATO caliber.
thats what the Mosin Nagant caliber is.
the bloke that made the ak denies that he made it based on any design buthis own. but they say he based it on an MP 44 like you said dave. but i think it was a combanation of the Tokarev SVT-38 SVT-40 and the MP 44. he just dosent like the germans seeing as though he was a tank commander.
so i dont think it falls under assault rifle, more like self loading rifle because its barrel is almsot the same length as a Lee Enfield MK V.
the styer aug is an assault rifle, not to mention the dodgy saftey catch it has on it.

Weren't the MP 40 series brought in to compete with the russian PPSh 21 which had a 71 round magazine?

Ya hit the nail on the Head Toney The 7.62x 39 falls roughly into the
same power factor of a 30-30 roughly ! Hense it becomes a assult rifle
rnd! or a intermidiate Round The 5.56 is now the standard Nato
Round (God help us all ) The Mp40 seris were a differant wapon the MP44
actualy appeared in 1943 & Hitler cannceled it's production seeing
no future in a shorterned 8mm round it was later whilst in Stalingrad
He asked what was needed to break the stalemate ? The reply was
10,000 of these (MP44's ) But they came into full production to late to
make any differance!!! Hey let's face it Slave labour was starting to
get hard to obtain by then ! THe supply of Jews was out stripped by the
demand !

Thanks Dave my history is very shaky on production of weapons. There were and still are so many variations being made its hard to keep track of them. If its of any interest my lad brought a book home from a second hand book stall. Miltary small Arms of the twentieth century by Ian Hogg and John Weeks Published by Purnell Book Services london. Informative reading for the unintiated like me.

F Y I - the AK - 47 is the world's most produced firearm. There is in excess of (get this) 100,000,000.I THINK I got enough zeros. One Hundred MILLION -thats right..ONE HUNDRED MILLION !! Themind can't even imagine that many ! Sadly - MOST of them have been produced without any royalties being paid to the Ruskies. They hold the patent - but nobody honours it.(Try THAT with an American rifle!!)

sorry hoadie, its only 50 - 70 million produced. they dont know a number to the nearest million because they are produced from afganistan to mexico.
so i was mistaken it is more of an assault rifle. than that settles the matter, out of all rifles the smelly is the best!
although i wouldent say that to a yank who has an M1 garand. i met a bloke last week that has one and says that all other military rifles are sh*t, the smelly god will take care of him i am sure...

I Dunno Dano - There was just a WEEK LONG hoopla by the media over here about the AK -47. They interviewed Kahlishnikov himself- as well as big shots in Russian miltary/arms production. Took a whole week THATS where I get the figure of 100 MILLION from. It's produced in more than 150 countries.
Venezuela just signed a deal to buy a wack of them from Russia.(They threw the U.S. deal out)
Oh - Alot of yanks LIKE & collect the Garand. But I don't know too many that say it's the best.
Ask cookie monster, or Dave. We've all owned 'em..& if I could find my stupid camera - I'd show you WHY they weren't so good !

Tony;
My mate (Robert Camp) was born in Liverpool (I'm Aug 7th, he's Aug 6th) His dad joind the Brit army just before the war, served through the war, & then a full carreer after.Red Devils - RSM.They lived EVERYWHERE that empire was. Bob Sr & the Mrs hadn't seen each other in over a year (closer to 2, actually)He was in Malta-I believe-& RAF was brining the Mrs & a few other military families to settle in.She told the story of how as they were approaching to land - they could see the paratroops leavin the other end..On they're way to the Suez!
Robert Sr. was presented the B.E.M. by HM Elizabeth, for his work in Jamaica.
Seems as though someone was always givin the world a hot foot in those days!

i personally dont like the garand because is semi-automatic. this is me personally, i just dont like semi-automatics. i dont know a whole lot about the M1 so i cant say whats 'really' bad about it. but i am sure the 30-06 cartridge it has, has got a nice kick to it.

" Give em all the same grub and all the same pay and the war would be over and done in a day!"
I agree with Dave wholeheartedly on that. They should go and see their mates get cut down at the side of them. Its a sickening sight Shame Maggie Thatcher wasn't with us at Goose Green she wouldn't have crowed so loud after that!!

allan... politician...
it is funny that you mention thatcher, that war hungry mongrel.
i belive she has said in her life i will touch war politics on anygiven day of the week, but i wont touch combat politics with a 10 foot pole.
i dont like that women.
ok anyway. i got to talking with a few mates at school about this (all disagree with me). i said the SMLE is the best WWI rifle. back in the trenches it was the best. they came up with a point saying that the smelly had a rate of twist of 1:16 which made it extreamly in accurate. of course, everyone knows that the german mauser was the most accurate, but who cares about accuracy when 'pots shots' are the word of the day.
whats the rate of twist in a smelly? i couldent answer that. but it dosent matter, i am sure two 174grn bullets make up for one... .
still, go the smelly.
|
Posted By: Guests
Date Posted: April 30 2006 at 5:20pm
THe SMLE came into it's own as it was the more robust action when it
came to mud & snow! It was not as over engineered as the
Mauser ! I think from memory the rate of twist is 1.16 . The
Enfield was blessed with the simlisity of the action & large Mag
capasity

In the right hands any weapon is dangerous. As for 2=1 if you don't get your target with the first round you are on a hiding to nothing. He/she is going to either duck or shoot back either way you lose the element of surprise. Sod all the theory son it comes down to animal instinct, the will to survive, trying to keep calm and determination to make sure the other guy dies for his country. Forget the spray and pray! Practice with your rifle make it your best friend and it'll look after you. A gun is only as accurate as the nut behind the trigger. I've seen guys with state of the art rifles shooting and matched em shot for shot with an enfield using battle leaf sights. I'm not boasting its a statement of fact the gun becomes part of you after practicing long enough.

Lee Enfield may not be as accurate as the mausers and springfields but it is more reliable and an accurate rifle is useless if it is too gummed up with mud or dirt to work.
The Enfield will group in a man size target and lets face it, that is all that is required for a battle rifle.
The Enfield is the fastest bolt action military rifle ever made.
All in all I think that gives it top spot, But then I am biased as I am totally in love with my Enfield.
|
Posted By: Guests
Date Posted: May 03 2006 at 3:40pm
I totaly agree with Lithgow ! 30 aimmed rounds per min is pretty good
going for a Bolt gun ! The Enfield was a purpose built firearm. that
purpose was to put Humanoid targets down & it did it with
very few complaints !

That is an outfit called Arsenal. I got to pet one in our local gun store.. It was really nice. It is so much more then just an AK, well made. (It is all milled) The one I looked at was in 5.56 here is a photo sorry if the photo size is big.

god save the Queen"!
Jeez I did'nt even know she was "Crook" (sick to non aussies ) I'll send her a card then !
Al, don't worry about having English Blood !!! That's what Blood transfusetions are for !!!!
Now that I've upset the Empire (again )
Those new AK's look to be a nice unit ! But
..........What use are they in the real world ????????? let's face it
they were designed for a specific job !
Oh on the subject of Cricket ! I have
never seen the sence of going out into the heat of the day to play a
game where the object of the exercise is for a chap to throw a hard
ball at you & you only have a hunk of wood to defend yourself !
& Your not allowed to run down the pitch & belt him with the
hunk of wood after his thrown the ball at you ! Let alone hit him
before he can throw the ball at you !

Some game THAT turns out to be!!At least in hockey, ya get to fire a very dense, hard puck @ people (usually @ some point, resulting in fractures & lost teeth), & get to start fights with guys WAY bigger than you (usually you get to throw the first hit), secure in the knowledge that the referee will save your bacon! And when it's over, theres ALWAYS a couple cases of beer in the dressing room, to carry you until y'all get to the bar for beer & wings!
Cricket don't sound like it's very civilized. I'll stick to hockey & golf!

Ive seen several examples of this over the years
starting with what could be called extreme Crowning jobs of about 1/4
of a inch into the muzzle through to the first inch or so of a worn
muzzle being counter bored . Now several of these were very well done
& some of the others ? Well ...................A determened man
with a demtral tool or Drill bit can do.........Well really horrible
things to a rifle or hand gun

Well Dave,
This Rifle has about a 1 and 1/8th inch counter bore in the
muzzele its an M38 Rusian Nagant Rifle that i just bought. so what do
you think? I havent fired it yet, so i dont know if its accurate or
not. it is a rearsanaled job from J&G sales. it lookes pretty
good other than the mag bottom cover is forced matched. and very bad
machining marks on the reciever. Well Dave hows the roo stew coming? I
have eaten some Emu stew before and have jerkeyed it to, fried and
Bar-B-Qued it to,
it was pretty good. not much there for the effort though especially if you have to
feed the critters. they eat as much as a cow in one year. its cheaper to raise the cow
or steer for slauter. in my opinoin. what have you to say on this ?????

I would say at a guess the M38 you've brought had a worn muzzle
& instead of cutting off the end of the muzzle & then
recrowning it . This methord has been used! Now without seeing
the actual rifle I would'nt be able to tell if it was done by a
comptant gunsmith or if it has been done by a "Backyarder " ! THe only
way your going to find out how she shoots is to try it out! If
all else fails just cut that section off & get the
muzzle recrowned (helpfull hint just have a look down the muzzle
& check to see that they've removed all the worn section of
rifleing )
The only timeI have ever eaten EMU
was as a Kid when Dad used to get a young one & Mum would cook it
slowly for about 10 hrs in the oven ! Never did much for me then ! Mum
also used to get us to be on the look out for eggs (one Emu Egg
=8 Chcken eggs ) She used to make the Nicest Spounge cakes you've ever
eatern! Of course she never seemed to worry that she was sending us
Kids to face a certain Death getting said eggs away from the Father
Bird !!!!!! Talk about throwing Christens to the lions Emu Farming was becoming a big thing over here ,but I've heard very little of it in recent years.

Yea same over here with the Emu farming every one put their money into
the breeding and slaughtering but no one put the meet out to the
publice to try
so it went bust when the breeder market got saturated,Emus were going
for $10,000 to upwards as much as $20,000 a peice the high end being
the ones that laid more eggs than normal, I had 12 of them at one
time ,man talk about tear the naighbors
dog up! they were great come Deer season when the hunting clubs dogs
came on my property, the emus would tear them up,the ones that got away
never did come back.
I told my wife we should feed them wearing hunter orange so they would
go after the trespassers in the back. they would run you over for a
white plastic bucket,them the
horses, goats, cows, and sheep. man i could not pick up a bucket around
hear with out gettin/causing a stampead. we still have one emu left he
has run of the pasture.
he kinda sneaks up on ya when im out shooting on my range,or he will
dump my ammo out and try to eat it gotta watch him he will try to eat
any thing odd.

My Oath I was Ok ! That's why God created little Brothers! They can run like a whippet with a Daddy Emu chasing them !
We had the same thing happen over here with both
Ostich & Deer Farming (about 30,000 for breeding Pairs) then as
everybody got into the market it went a burton! We have a Herd of wild
Fallow deer in the hills due to a Farmer going bust & just
relased them! They are classed as a Feral animal in SA & are shot
out of Hand ! Mohair Goats were also the rage for several years same
thing happened though! Ems have a nasty habit of trying to
eat anything that takes their fancey ! Some frends of ours had a
Pet emu by the name of Gus & he once came close to being
sent to the big Paddock in the sky after he tore off &
swallowed several buttons of a very expensive Jacket my Mum had
just brought!

Hey Dave, Had one Emu eat some top water bass baits, kinda wonderd why
he was bleeding from both ends, The one we got left, we call him dum
dum.
I had them eat a half of a 5 gal. bucket of crawfish one time. and we had a couple
that would wait by the waters edge for the fish food to floot close enough for them to get.

Every chance we get round here ! THere are several wild herds
round SA & although I belive that in the Eastern States there are
controls in place for Deer hunting. I'm sure Allan could help out here
? It's a bit like Camels over here their Bloody Feral & although
there's big money in live export . They areclassed as Feral & only
a normal hunting permit is needed to shoot the Damn things& as
there is a estemated 700,000 roaming around there is no season !
Though the average hunter will never see oneor make the mistake of
going through a outfitter to shoot one & pay several thousand
dollars for the priverlage !
