I have been wanting one of these for a while. But they are not the most abundant. Well I got one now! It was made by Poole I think (P) in '46 and it has broad head arrow markings on many of the components. My question, How can I cleanup the scales on it without causing any dammage. Second question, I've read that the #5 bayonet was also considered a fighting knife. Would putting a bit of an edge on it detract from its value?
Thanks

i have read with the p07's that they left them blunt so's to do more damage.. i dunno i thought somethin half a meter long would still do it sharp or blunt...with ya #5 id say (my opinion) mate if it hasnt got an edge..leave it the way it is...historically speaking.

ill second that , it is best to leave it , besides its safer when your friends come over and handle them - trust me on this one , i handled a friends fathers marine Kbar when i was a kid [about 1958] - took three stiches to close

From a historical standpoint (one of my girlfriends has a son that is a Museum curator) leave it the way it is!!!Unless it is in dire condition. Can you post a pic?

as long as they dont start applying that preservation wax treatment you probably are OK , but if they move you to that storage area where they keep the nondisplayables id figure it was over

I'll try taking some better pics of the bayonet in the mourning at work. I think it probably has better light. The scabbard looks good, I took it appart and cleaned and oiled it. A bit of light rust and most of the painted finish is gone but no dents.

I got my bayo a few days ago.... i was getting worried, cuz i hadn't heard from the seller since the bidding closed. But it showed up in the mail anyhow. right on time actually.
It's really in great condition! and it fits, hah! Now my rifle feels more like some kind of lance or spear. 17" of steel on the end makes me feel like i'm in that movie Zulu with Michael Caine. Yeah!
(P.S. I know neither the Enfield Mk III or the 1907 Bayonet were used in that movie.)

Hey Chach..your wrong Mate! They WERE used in the movie!! They were hopin we wouldn't notice. If you have a copy of it - play it.Go to slow motion toward the end, during the last skirmish before the final redout. There you will see some of the actors actually ARE using Lee Enfields!!

I think these are a bit better. Sometime this week I should be getting a frog. This was my favorite purchase on ebay in the last year! Might have paid a bit much though.(before I showed up on this sight) $125 for the bayo. Now that I have it, I've seen others for a bit less. Oh well, live and learn....

thats a nice looking bayo , maybe a touch to the scabord with 4ought wool soaked in oil - DO NOT SCRUB iot will take off the rust without ruining the finish , but basicly a decent set and the cost depends on your desire to own , ive paid too much for a couple i really wanted but gotten a few for free and that equals it all out

Rockycoyote: I had dereck look @ ur photos.(The curator) He even taught me some new stuff..listen up.HJe says the ONLY things U should remove are:dust, dirt. & even then -carefully. He says u should NOT use oils on the blade(new to me!) You should only use Isopropol Alchol. It wont rust.If youv got you bayo in a resonably temperate place-it wont rust.He also says NOT to remove any paint that my be on it from the Armoury. These things WILL decrease the value from a collector's standpoint. And UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you sharpen it!!!That devalues, & it will invite rust, & it alters the size.
There you have it mate.Right from a curator!

Thanks Hoadie! I'll leave it alone. No sharpening or anything abrasive. I agree, I figured oiling was a no brainer?
Many thanks!

good to hear my own paranoiya was correct...no sharpening..
i always felt this was defacing the bayo..if it wasnt sharp issued or by the bloke issued to..its best left alone.

sounds like very good advice , i was about to sugest mineral spirits for the grip scales followed by multiple thin coats of BLO but i will defer to 'the curator' as the value in these is best preserved - 'they aint makin them anymore'
