The largest game I have taken with the 303 is moose and deer, the moose was with factory 215 grain and the deer was taken with handloaded 150 grain bullets. The moose surprisingly was a one shot kill beteween the shoulder blades as it ran up a hill away from me at about 70 yards. |

I have downed several game animals with my No.4 Mk I*. Bear, Elk, Moose, White tail and mule deer, Big horn sheep and numerous smaller game. Now the Big horn sheep was a true test of her down range capbilities it was pushing 350 meters. I knew the round would make it there my concern was in the remaining energy to cleanly harvest the animal. All I shoot is hand loads. The only time I shoot factory rounds is to plink and remove the projectiles and nitro-cellulous to acquire the brass. My wife finds it amusing that I refer to all my weapons as females. I like the way the Enfield rifle takes game. I run into people that say its not good for anything, that was the year that I took a big bull moose with my carbine with one shot, the skeptics quickly shut up. There are more powerful rifles out there on the market but I will probably have at least one Enfield in the safe.

I've used the .303 to send thousands of Water Buffalo &
camels of to the big "where ever they go in the sky " admitedly I
would'nt recomend the .303 as a rifle for water Buff, as I once had one
charge me after the first shot & it literaly fell snorting Blood
over my feet ! Witnesses said I fired at it like a machine gun &
they had never seen such bravery ! The fact was I was frozen to the
spot in Fear & The rate of fire was self preservation ! But for
camels I never found a more effective round coupled with the fire power
of the 10 shot mag Dave |

Sounds like an honest account of your exploits Dave, others may have told a slightly exaggerated tale of the hunt!!!!I'm glad to see there is reality in the world still where you can tell a real hunting story without all the campfire tales to go with it. "Frozen with fear" pretty damn real to me.....

.303 Carbine, Here is some loads you requested, please use caution becouse these are all maximum loads. The load I took the hypothetical big horn sheep was a 100 grain .311 dia. Nosler balsitic tip loaded with 44.5 grains or IMR 3031 with a muzzle velocity of 3050fps.. The other imaginary large game animals were taken at closer distances and did not require a flat trajectory so I used the 180 grain .311 nosler ballistic tip loaded with 47.5 grains of IMR 4831 driving it out the barrel to 2500fps. The .303 was actualy a pretty big rifle in it's day. I myself have not had the oppertunity to hunt with my .303 yet other then the few unfortunate squirrels that happen to cross my sights. ------------- I've seen the future and I don't like it. |

WE used to shot the damned thing for Pet food & then some bright spark decided that the meat could be marketed as Goumea ! It depends on the age of the camel ! To me a Young one tastes something like Mutton where as a older one tastes like beef! Then you get the Old Bulls & cows! They taste like my mother in laws cooking & we do'nt want to go there 
I knew a Old Afghan up in the north of the state who swore by the Fat
in the hump for cooking & used to sing my praises when I dropped
him off a supply There was a time that People used to dread comming to our place for a BBQ the second time (they never knew what they were eating the first time round ) I have served Camel steaks & the Guests would pester me on where I'd got such big Rump steaks from ? I used to tell em it was country Killed meat (quite truthfully ) from a Station up north (also quite truthfully ) I got caught ot when serving up Goat & a very well to do woman asked where this beautifull lamb came from ? I was just going to explian it was country killed ect & a drunken mate answered for me that it was'nt Lamb it was Bloody Goat & fine goat at that !!!!!!!!!! Dave |

| dave , you are sounding like the south here in America now, eating BBQ'ed Opossum, Raccoon, Chittlerings ,LOL My Aunt came down to visit and she would not eat anything I cooked becouse she thought some wild game I harvested from the street that had been seasoned in the summer son for three days. She ate three helpings of some BBQ'ed beef............LOL at least thats what I told her it was. Remember thats why we eat everything with tabasco sauce on in it........LOL |

AS Kids we were brought up on what ever Dad was shooting at the time to this day I can't face Rabbit Or Roo meat (& trust me wheb I say that Camel is right up there on the no,no list ) With my kids if we want them to eat Broccili I threatern them with Roo steaks ! They ask for a second helping of Broccili then  Dave |

The last mule deer I got in BC was with my Jungle Carbine shooting 180 factory 180 grain Power Points. I was driving down a logging road and it jumped out of the bush and ran down the road in front of me. By the time I got out and got the rifle loaded it was 125 yards away. The only shot I had was the preverbial "Texas Heart Shot". After firing the deer needed a finshing shot to the head. I could not find the bullet hole until we skinned it out totally, the entrance was an inch to the left of the "hoop". I have made two "Texas Heart Shots" on deer in my life as the small fast moving target is rather hard to hit.

.303 Carbine, I made one of those with a 30-30 Winchester model 94 one time on a white tail in southern Mississippi. I was less fortunate I found hair no blood and he trotted off to live another year. It was the last day of gun season around sun set a few years ago. The "Cookie Monster" |

A excellent example of the .303 is By WDM Bell who was a Elephant
hunter in the early part of last century ! He was said to have used the
7x57 on elephant ,but he in reality used a .318 mostly (he once said
that he would have prefered to use a 6.5 that he had but it was to
"delicate" a rifle he owned ) He used the .303 in the hope of running
into a Herd of Bulls so he could make use of the 10shots ! He was famed
for using a Martini in .303 & holding the spare rounds between his
fingers & could fire the rifle as fast as a bolt action ! Also the NZ Forresty Dept back in the 1950's -60's issued .303s to their Deer cullers 2million deer were shot with .303s before they lost count! Over here in Australia God only knows how many Buffalo were shot let alone other game ! I think the .303 has nothing to prove anymore as a game stopper . Dave |
