I bought this rifle in a very questionable condition and disrepair. So far the rebuild to 7.62x51mm is going fairly smooth,"knock on wood". The bolt cycles with no hiccups and the trigger is as smooth as smooth can be. Here comes the question part. The bolt handle has a small hole drilled into it. The bolt serial number matches the rifles and the lugs contact where they need to as well. The hole doesn't affect anything and I am not worried about it snapping off anytime soon. Why the hole? There is a tiny hole just under the main hole and it appears to have a broken drill bit stuck in there that also appears to have been smoothed down to match the contour of the handle. But,why the hole? ...aaannd go!...

Bubba was modifying for an improvement to the design? The stuck drill bit is awesome!

Since it is the matching bolt, I would salvage it rather than replace. I would just weld that sucker up and make pretty make good.

The broken drill bit cracks me up. That's quite the conversation piece for sure.

I'm not going to weld it up. Nothing to worry about as far as I am concerned. The bolt is working as it should so why bother with the hole.
A conversation starter for sure...

I'd dob it with weld, and smooth it down.

Here's the main reason I don't want to weld it. I might ruin the broken drill bit...

Who knows why? The larger hole isn't even centered on the handle. Maybe a lightening effort?

I do not know how to upload a video. If you search YouTube for Custom No4 Enfield in 7.62mm, there is a 1 minute video of me working the bolt with the hole in it. If one of you kind folk can upload it here for me,that would be greatly appreciated...

Vid gives an error message.
I have no idea why. Maybe "Bubba" was trying to make some kind of bolt rotation stop screw for some reason? Then he broke the bit, used an unbroken bit to re-drill & countersunk it then realized it was a daft idea in the first place & simply gave up?

Find the video
Actually go to U-Tube.
Copy the long line of test in the search box at the top of the screen.
Go to "Post Reply" not quick reply on this site.
look at the top of the box where you type stuff in. Find the "film clip" button.
open it & pasts into it the copied text.
hit enter

I will not let me upload my own video.
I typed in         Custom No4 Enfield in 7.62mm         The very first video is mine. I did the copy and paste thing and it still will not upload. Keeps giving me an error message.

Yeah, preview works fine for me, then says 'Error inserting object in current location' when I try to add it to the post. Here's the URL:

Edit: weird, it worked when I didn't do 'preview' first.

It may be the site's software. Go for a direct link to the video, not the thumbnail that's what I did with mine.

Its posted now.  The main reasoning for the brief video is to show the ease of bolt operation after polishing and that the hole in the bolt does not interfere with the cycling of the bolt. The added bonus is watching the snap cap POP out of the chamber the way it does. That's my reworked No4 extractor claw assisting the tab on the magazine. Big smile

Fill it. (Weld) Dress top and bottom and refinish. My opinion only...

Put a lanyard ring in the hole for a real conversation piece.

Not worth the time honestly. I locked it into a vice block and put a torque wrench on it.  Put 50Ft Lbs on it up and down. It's not going to break anytime soon. Watch the video. I barely have to push down on the bolt and the upward stroke is half of that.

What a shame about the matching number with a hole. I think that I would do as you, leave as is. Or use some epoxy about the same color, which can be removed and can be added at any time in the future.  Enjoy it for now.

I'm looking at this particular rifle build in the utilitarian sense.  As basic as possible, working with what I have without having to invest alot of time into this. The master component has a new barrel, the trigger group has been cleaned up and polished, the bolt was taken apart, cleaned and inspected for any wear areas, or cracks. The bolthead is exceptional and firing pin protrusion is right where it should be. The aftermarket PH scope mounts are as basic as you can get with only one hole needing to be drilled and tapped. The muzzlebrake was in a parts box I have and is functional and will provide extra stability when the rifle is fired. One small hole in the bolt handle will not affect any workings on this weapon and will not detract from the aesthetics of the rifle as well either. The broken drill bit left in the handle is the cool factor...Approve

..................or solder a bit of brass into the hole, and stamp your initial on it.   Sort of a custom job!  :-)

I like that!
Great idea.

the hole in the bolt does not bother me on a sported rifle - its not a collector , i almost would say i like it for the character it adds ,

That's pretty much why I'm not touching it. I did put a new scope on it today. A ccOp 4-16×44•side focus•Mil Dot•1"tube.
I'm taking it to the range tomorrow morning. The reproduction sniper sling adds to the character as well.
