I think they were all test fired, just a few rounds at the factory, either for function or proof.
When I unwrapped mine there was firing residue under the cosmolene in the bore.
Lazy buggers never cleaned it I guess, just sank it in a vat of boiling cosmolene, preserving even the "evidence".

I realize they were proof fired.  by unfired I meant by the military or anyone after.

Yup thats normal I think. "Unfired" is really really unfired though.
But yes you're right.

agreed - as almost every rifle was function tested , you would be looking at a mummy wrapped rifle as one that was never fired outside of production , having been associated with a major US rifle producer over the years i can tell you that every single rifle was function tested before it left the production rack and packaged , after that who knows ? unless its still in the factory sealed packaging ,

wiped the stock down with Murphy's mixed with a drop of orange oil saturday night and put it out in the sun for a couple of hours yesterday. was about 74 degrees and she sweated out a ton of dark greasy oil. put the 1st coat of RLO on (actually pure flaxseed oil). looks a little flashy.  maybe I should of left it as was.

It looks fine to me. The tiger striped ones have a certain charm.
If you got that much oil out I'd have repeated the sunbath a few more times myself. My "La Breat Tarpits Commemorative" SMLE took several to really drain.

maybe I should take it down again this summer when it's 96 degrees and do it again.  just for fun.  even though its  mid 70's it's not really baking that well.

I put mine on the dash of out "Dustbuster" Mini-van wrapped in paper towels & shoved in a black trash bag. It got good & hot & stayed there all day.
No harm done but it got an amazing amount of oil out.
The I repeated it 4 or 5 more times till it quit oozing!

btw, this is a thick, heavy rifle if you haven't handled one.  the Lee Enfield's I have are MUCH lighter and feel a lot more handy.  to be expected I guess.

I have a Long Branch rifle Ive been working on just this night that has a bunch of pieced together woodwork. The fore end has never been fit and the buttstock has seen little to no use it appears.
It's a mix of beech and birch that after I washed the grime off the hand-guards and butt stock I gave it a good dose of the cold pressed flax seed oil all over.
With the washing of the birch its all starting to blend together into a relatively even tone that's not hard to look at.
Barlean's is what the name is on the side of the bottle.
When its done I want to shoot it in, check the bedding and post a target up into the virtual match thread.
