From time to time the issue of the ROSS RIFLE comes up on the forum.
Most people tend to refute what I was told by the veterans that had to use them(all gone now) about that rifle's shortcomings. Whilst up at the cabin this past weekend, I stopped into the A.N.A.F. for a pint or two...or three. The latest issue of their magazine was there.(May 2013). I took note that it had a VERY GOOD and informative piece on the ROSS RIFLE. I have 5 extra copies, if anyone wants one. I think you'll find it interesting, especially vis a vis the ENFIELD. No charge for the magazine..just cover my costs on postage. (you'll have to provide your address) Hoadie |

You will probably think quite differently after you read this article.
Its what I've been saying for years. Not covered in the article, was info about the equally(if not poorer) quality of the web gear designed to go along with it. In the first twirl at war, the Canucks dumped the web dockside in Blighty, & were given proper British web. Hoadie |

Well, the ONLY known surviving web kit - that we know of- is sitting in Hamilton Military Museum. Its not displayed, because of its deteriorated & fragile condition.
There was no leather that I saw, when I viewed it(maybe 12 - 15 yrs ago). But, as I said-it wasn't in best of shape Hoadie |

HEY! I just remembered something..(@ my age, these things DO have delayed reactions). I was told..by TWO individuals..about the webbing for the ROSS. The one time Mayor of my city, & the one time President of my Legion (both now have passed). They BOTH recalled going to Niagara on the Lake, to see their elder brothers off when they were being shipped out to Europe, early in the 2nd whirl at war. They said there was piles of stuff burning. It was web gear from the first twirl @ war. Said they woulda saved it for them, if they knew they were coming. This was webbing they used to train with, that was from stores - issued with the ROSS. It was apparently useless, & they would be issued new web in Blighty. So there ya go..sometimes I DO remember stuff..just takes a while.
