This was cobbled together in a hurry a while back. |

I've seen a couple of handmade ones being used after matches although this was some years ago.
There was the unmistakeable hand of a plumber involved looking at the copper pipe attached to a .303 case which was missing about a 1/3 of the length so the upper chamber got a good soaking of hot water.

or some thick wall 1.4" pvc pipe! The funnel is mostly a collectable, but as I have one I was gifted by a member I put it to good use. ![]() |

Great idea Brit! A smallish clear hose such as can be purchased at aquarium supply stores would probably do the trick!

I just use a piece of vinyl hose on the end of a funnel that fits the chamber. Don’t really need a funnel that big.

They're getting rare, used to be common as muck, now they're more like chicken teeth. I did an internet search & only found 2 in England & 1 in New Zealand, but shipping would be horrendous. I know some have bought a big funnel cut the base off a fired .303 case & JB welded them together to fill any gaps & secure it! You can usually find "bent ones" is automotive stores for transmission fluid & so on.

Where does one go about finding a "z tube"?

No worries. I have the "issue" giant galvanized funnel with the "z" tube! Its actually not bad with a cartridge gun, unlike muzzle loaders the crud doesn't get back into the action. Except maybe the bolt face. I shoot BP & so have all the nostrums & notions available. BP is actually easier to clean than corrosive. Best tip I ever got was "forget the patches"! ![]() Really, I have several mops & use them instead. One to wet brush, one to dry afterwards, & one to oil. You can wash them under a tap & re use for a long time.

I feel your pain. I am banished to the backyard in all weather, when it is time to clean my black powder guns.

Had to laugh at this, I get complaints when I bring the Martini Henry cases in to wash in the laundry tub, something about the stink of sulphur…. I’m seeing quite a bit of powder available in the US now, albeit at higher prices than they were before this shortage. You got to jump on it when you see it listed. I used to buy at gun shows to avoid the shipping and Hazmat fees. |

I am sure this has already been mentioned, but a vigorous cleaning with H2O is required after shooting black powder in any firearm.

Your load appears to be more realistic than that of the Speer manual #11. They propose one to load 25 grs under a 150 gr projectile. I think that to be rather warm load.

This ^^ The original BP 303 loads were compressed pellets of BP dropped into un-necked cases which were then necked just before the bullet was seated. I wasted weeks of my life trying to perfect a BP load before I was given the above information!

Its impossible to over load a .303 Brit with Black Powder, or even the substitutes. There just isn't enough case volume. You can have a lot of fun with a soft cast .32 RB or a single "00" lead, not plated, buck shot & a BP load too.

I am finishing up an eight lb keg of SR4759. With a gas checked, 215 grain bullet from the Lyman 314188? mold, I use 18 grains of 4759 with a small square of Dacron to hold the powder in position.
This load also works well with my .314”, 170 grain paper patched loads.

Wowser! Never thought of that one. I did not last long when I tested the waters of BP shooting, back in the late 70s. The cleanfreak new bride was quite upset, to say the least, upon my using our then 1 bed/1 bath condo bathtub for cleaning the rifle.
I will continue my internet search to see what is out there on the 4759. Am loathe to use the last 1/2 LB of 3031 on the .303, saving it for the .30-30. Would have thought that the component situation would have eased up by now, it's obviously (and sadly) not the case.
