Well, over the past weekend I committed to something major. I am buying a small house sitting on 6 acres of land. It's owned by my dad and he has had big offers on it but he knew I was very interested if he ever got rid of it. He offered it all to me for $20,000 on Contract For Deed. I couldn't pass it up. The only real downside is I will have to commute 45 miles to work but with a decent car the math comes out to being much cheaper than living in the middle of Watertown. Plus, I will have space to work on my vehicles and my own 100 yard rifle range that we set up long ago. I am excited... a little scared... but happy.

as life changing as this might seem today within a few months it will be as routine as paying rent or anything else you have ever done and you will be building a future with roots that obviously have a solid base already ,

i know nothing or things there but i think you got a deal on this new beginning , savor this new step you have taken , build your dreams , that drive is not that bad - ive done much more on a couple occasions in my life journey and those that travel for work would envy you that commute ,

i am very happy for you ,

You won't regret it Bear. I bought a place in the country 11 years ago, because city is too expensive to buy. It's renovation is still not finished; but it is mine! next year it'll be fully paid for and we'll have a party!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

I had been trying to look for a place closer to Watertown but it was way too expensive to afford anything. Which is why I have been stuck in an apartment for 17 years. Looking forward to having a yard to do stuff in, being able to get a pet finally.... and the freedom of peeing on a tree if I so desire LOL

Just think of it as rent you pay to yourself instead of a landlord.
Do remember to keep a maintenance budget though. Start right away even if its small like $10.oo a week. You're the janitor, plumber & so on now.

Well, things on this front are going even better. My dad and stepmom talked it over and they actually are selling me the property for $15,000. I tried to argue it was too low but they want out from under it and are happy that it is staying in the family and want to cut me a break. I am simply dumbfounded but I won't argue it any more. Heck of a deal!

If you get sheep get at least two as sheep are flock type things.

Happy for ya, Bear! Home ownership gives one a sense of accomplishment and pride. 100 yard gun range?! I am envious but very happy for you! 45 minutes drive is small compared to what I had to drive for almost 30 years. Try and hour and a half in the morning then over 2 hours coming home after a 12 hour shift at the paper mill. But...I never complained because I was paying a mortgage on a beautiful house for my family. Life is GREAT!!!

Well Canuck..I DID complain - & rightly so.
I was working at the Ford plant in Oakville. We worked 10 hour shifts on the line (w 1/2 hour for lunch). It was an hour commute into the damn place - always in the dark, cuz U started @ 0700. 11 hrs later U try to go home in the Toronto commuter traffic.(again usually in the dark..U begin to feel like a mole!! )
When we finished the Windstar, we had a "filler" contract on the Freestar. We worked 2 weeks on & 2 weeks off, but at 8 hr shifts.
Thanks to the commute, one week I spent 40 hrs working in the plant & 42 hrs in commuting.
Man! I DO NOT miss that place!

Work a deal with a neighbor who has sheep, offer to let them graze for free a couple of days a week. They'll trim that lot faster than you think!
We did this at our cottage in Wales & it worked a charm. Be aware they're * ahem * "self fertilizing" though.Ermm

Unfortunately no neighbors have sheep anymore. I have been thinking about a couple sheep or a calf. That won't be for a couple years though. First thing is to get settled in and get a house cat. I have been wanting a pet for years and a house cat will be a good start, I think.
