I don't have any stripper clips for my Enfield No.4 MK2. Do I need a particular clip to top load my Enfield or are these reloading stripper clips a universal fit among most Enfield variants? Yeah, probably a dumb question. I've simply loaded this rifle one cartridge at a time in the past as I seldom shoot it. I do love the rifle!

There are numerous Marks of the chargers, some work better than others. They work with all .303 British Lee Enfield rifles, and expect they also work with the No. 3 P14 Enfield.
Certainly nothing wrong with loading the magazine one cartridge at a time from the open breech. I do that often. The only reason I use chargers is that they are a necessity for the rapid fire stages in the historic/Vintage service rifle matches I shoot in. |

The only point I'd add is some of the chargers are blued while others are parkerized. The rougher finish of the parkerized chargers make it very difficult to push the rounds into the magazine compared to the blued ones. I polish the inside of my parkerized chargers before use.

You charge a Enfield with ammo.
Stripper is when you take it a part to clean it. If you chargers are parkerized them you need to polish them with crocus cloth to get them right.

The ones to avoid are the Mk V IIRC. They're easy to tell apart. 1: Rough grayish parkerized finish. 2: All lightening cuts are circular, including the and ones which form the retainer spring for the cases. 3: They say "V" right on them  Good ones on top with the black shiny finish & oval spring cuts,bad ones with ark & round ones on bottom.  |

As a collector of clips, the finish on the clip is variable and not associated with the model. The clip that you are referring to as the one to have is the Mk IV* or the Mk 4.
Like the rifles, the * denotes a change not worthy of creating a new mark number. In this instance, the change from a circular cutout to an oval one on the spring arm. Unlike the rifles, the * was never stamped onto the charger. The main issues experienced with chargers and their subsequent changes related to them either being too springy, or not springy enough. The former results in difficulty to charg and the latter with rounds falling out or rim lock happening. The ones marked Mk 4 (rather than IV), are the same Mk IV* design, just produced after 1945, when roman numerals were dropped in preference to arabic numerals. I currently have 75 different marks/manufacturers in my collection, not including stamp and finish variations. Here are some blued Mk IV clips:  Here are some Mk 4 clips. The green (looks more mustard in the picture) is the tropical coating:  Here are some Portuguese clips, that don't follow the standard Commonwealth patterns. They are know in several finishes. I have one gray (? nickle) and bare steel.  |

That's an interesting collection!
I use the charger clips when shooting the service rifle competitions. I bought a pack of clips on the internet that are absolutely horrible! They are Parkerised finish; but it's the steel that makes the difference. It doesn't flex enough. Leaving scratches on the cases and almost impossible to load effectively. However I received a few full chargers with my Resistance No4. They were part of the parachutage to our local Resistance in 1944. So I use those clips for the competitions. There is a world of difference between the two types. So be very careful if purchasing on the internet! If you want an example of what not to buy, I'll send you one . That way you will know what to avoid!

Thanks Zed - at a guess, are they maked Mk 4 and the letter I with a broad arrow over it? If so, these are late production Indian chargers and the quality is definately substandard. You commonly see these sold in pack of five or 10 on eBay.

AhHa! a charger collector! I was hoping there's be one out there somewhere! A question. what is the purpose of the 3 rd set of teardrop-shaped "pips", further up the sidewalls & facing at 90° to the "normal" ones in other charger marks in the Mk2(IIRC)? |

im glad there is someone with a charger collection , i wish i had started that back when , and oilers and so much more ......but i was busy with revolvers and bayonets back then in addition to my rifles
the one thing ive been biting my lip on here is that nagging tony moment - to the poster - keep your dollar bills for the strippers - we load or cartridges' in chargers
