Ya, it would be a correct period bayonet. They really didn't manufacture any other style bayonets for the No.4 until after WWII. Atleast this is what I have read!

If you really want to get fussy, you may want a Savage manufactured bayonet. I can't tell from your photo if yours is or not, but if it is it should have a squared off "S", possibly in a box marked on it somewhere.

They were designed for quick mass production, the other thing is being a spike they didn't jam as easily as the bowie type if you stuck them into somebody. The other use was probing for mines. If any of you have seen the old entrenching tool that was supplied. 2 piece like a pick with a ferrule on the bottom of the shaft like the muzzle of an enfield. The bayonet clipped on and you could probe for mines to your hearts content. Personally I'd rather send Hoadie in with his size 14 hobbit boots rather than prod around for something that could blow the end off me pick shaft or worse if you hit a shu mine and it popped off.

thats a keeper , technicaly they were issued randomly so any bayo mfrg could be with any rifle , but what has been sugested is true that savage made both as did longbranch so you can "match" those if you want , a nice "S" would possibly interest a purchaser but wont be any more valuable [id say get one and get the US made M5 scabord made by victory plastics with integral frog - but you may need to settle for a canadian sling]

International Military Antiques sells the "Victory Plastics" US-made scabbards for around $15 (US). I bought one and it was in decent shape. Hopefully soon when I can post photos, I'll fire off a photo.

Yes, I had heard about there being two versions of the "Victory Plastics" Scabbard. The one I have has the canvas frog riveted directly to the scabbard, with a strap around the mouth of the scabbard. I'm not sure about the "other version", although I could have sworn I saw another "Victory Plastics" scabbard in a photo here on this site, that scabbard did not have a frog riveted to it (at least that is what it looked like in the photo to me).
As for me posting photos on this site, it might be a while, so check out International Military Antiques website, the photo on the site is the exact vesion of the scabbard I have. Mark |

mine is double riveted at the back with web wrapping around the front - it may have been mine you saw but i dont recall if i posted it , i would not have shown the back as ive not shot that so it might have looked without rivet , id like to find the second so id have an excuse to buy another bayo :>}

All right, did a little searching. A photo of the type of scabbard I have is in the thread entitled "A Pile of the Them". There is also another Victory Plastics scabbard (without frog) photographed lying on the Union Flag in the thread "Gratuitous Bayonet Shot". I can not tell if that is a different version of scabbard, or that the canvas frog is long gone.
I think those are the only two photos I know of. I really hope someday I can get to posting photos (the Girlfriend and I are planning to take care of that soon), not saying I have a great collection, just would like to show some of my items off...LOL. Mark I promised photos of my Savage No.4 Mk.II Bayonet and the Victory Plastics Scabbard a while back, here they are.

Tomcat , its not the great we want to see particularly , we enjoy all the photos , often learn of new things and interesting deviations that way , we encourage your photos and look forward to them , ill try to shoot my scabords one day soon - i think my "OLD" photos are beginning to bore folks , i need to learn lighting and backdrops to get mine to look better
