Hows it going? I was just looking around the net for enfield info and this looks like a good place to be! I have just been given my fathers #5 carbine. I'm sure its the real deal, Lightening cuts and electro stenciled serial# ect... My father purchased this rifle in the mid 50s from the local sporting goods store for about $12.00 . The rifle was "Sporterized" by my pop , he took the upper forend off and bevelled the lower forend a bit. As well as dehorning (taking down the sharp edges) the receiver. My pop told my that when he purchased the rifle it looked new, never issued once he got through the cosmoline. The magazine has the same serial on it as the receiver. My main question, Is it possible for him to have a never issued surplus rifle? Second, where can I find an upper forestock for this?I would like to get it back to stock condition. Oh yeah, he also took off the original flash suppresor. I put a reproduction on it. Since then we have found the original..LOL Any info would be great!

I'm with Hoadie on this ! I would say it would of been unissued in the mid 50's ! I don't think they were a popular rifle by any means . Some people  love em some hate them ! There dosen't seem to be any middle ground ! I've owned a couple over the years & the first thing I did was to get rid of the butt plate & replace it ! The stupid rubber recoil pad that was fitted was designed by the Marquis De Sade ! I'm sure ! A Old mate of mine has one that was converted to 25-303 & swears by it ! The main thing is ,if your happy with it that's all that matters

I'm not familiar with the"SIR" term.Whats it stand for?
Crown Assets Disposal, is a company set up to dispose of surplus federal equipment.Apparently, you must be on they're approval list before you can buy anything from them.(This is where my friend Dennis, has acquired his 2 cannons, & other vehicles etc.) Interesting to note here - I remember , maybe not quite 10 years ago, reading a listing of surplus firearms offered for sale by an outfit in Texas.(This was @ my mate BOB CAMP gunshop in Niagara Falls)Amongst the listings was "Snider Enfield Rifles..Still in crates..released from Canadian Crown Assets." I guess they hang on to things for quite a while.(true statement-if our miltary aircraft are any indication!)

As fer individuals buying surplus firearm from the gov't..evidently not. From what I understand, you hafta be on they're "approved" list, have a FFL, & you buy full "lots" There might be alot of stuff in said lot ya don't want - but its all or nothing. So I'm told.Course, if ya have a "friend" on the inside...
Hoadie - pass me the sunscreen!

Hi hoadie
Don't burn you have to like it. from what I under stand they will not release any Firearms even to a Dealer. The only Firearms they have in stock that could be released  are some No4, No7 and some cadet .22 Rifles I am told they are cutting up all Firearms inc FN C1A1 C1A1 C1 SMG and No7 .22 .
Cheers

One of the conditions of my  "D" & "C" endorsments  (semi auto Rifle- ,
Shotgun ,Pump action  shot gun ) is visits from my Dear friends in the Firearms branch ! I always make a point of writing a number on my forearm in black ink & wear a Yellow arm band with a Star of David on it ! I once explained to them that 60 odd years ago under another Gov it was mandortory  for undesirables to have to be marked & check in with the police ! Normally followed by a Zieg heil ! (some of the guys actualy give one back to me ) Yes I know it's bloody childish of me ....But is'nt it a little childish to waste man power & hours to check that their still secured (the firearms ) ?

Dave, there was an unfortunate shooting at a Seattle, Wa. high school this week. the anti-gun crowd is already yelling " oh when will we tighten up these gun laws?" ( or, rifle laws for Hoadie) The pistol in question was found to have been stolen a couple of years ago in a burglary, and no amount of laws would have kept it out of the school.

This is how the woes of most shooters strarted over here Ed !
The Port Arthur Massacre ! One Martin Bryant obtained a AR15 & went beserck ! In the Knee jerk reaction that Followed ! Semi Auto rifles & Semi Auto shot Guns were banned (Pump action shot guns were banned cause some one mentioned them no other reason !) Ok Fair enough it was a tragic thing that should of never happened ! Bryant is a Mentaly handicapped person & there were no preceedures in place in Tasmania at that time to check on a persons mental state to own a Firearm ! In fact if you wanted to own a Machine gun in Tassie you could !

Now lets look at a couple of facts ! The weapon that Mr Bryant obtained in Tasmania ........Had been handed into  the Victorian Police  over on the Main land &  the records showed it had been destroied!!!!!!!
Yet some months latter this Destroied Rifle ended up in the hands of a Mentaly challanged person ,who used it to commit a horrendes crime!
Was this a registered weapon ? No !!! It was a weapon that was shown to have been destroied ! Now the intresting part of the story comes with the Punnishment of Mr Bryant ! He was placed in a cell specialy designed !  It was like a Fish bowl ! Unbreakable Glass ! 24hr camera survallance ! No contact with other prisoners, let alone the outside world !  How fast we forget these things ! Just recently  a new Max Security  prison was completed in Tasmania  & in Parlement  the Minister of Correctional services  was asked  if Mr Bryant  was to be moved into the new Prison ? The reply was along the line of that Mr Bryant was in the Prison System in Tasmania & his where abouts was not to be released!
I had to ask myself at the time ......What about the special Cell ? The media had loved flashing it about & yet now  this man is in the prison system ??????? The Dept of defence is having problems accounting for L.A.W.S that went missing & turned up being sold to the Underworld here in Australia ! We talk about Gun control  ,when our own Gov cant control the security of our ordanance ! Jeez be the first Thug on the Block to own a 75mm Light Anti Tank weapon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
