I did not get the No8 fore end and upper handguard.  I did manage to acquire the butt stock. I have a Mk2 fore end and upper handguard. So far I have only removed 1/4" of wood from the handguard.  I definitely removed alot of wood from the fore end. It looks okay,so far,I think.

I believe that a L39A1 would have had the service style butt stock. The Envoy had the pistol grip type.

Although I prefer Stanforth's option,  I get the impression that the choice of butt stock was very much up to the owner. I have seen both combinations.  Actually, my Envoy came with a service type butt and my L39 with the pistol grip.

Mine has the normal butt stock to which a cheek piece has been added at some time. It also has the front sight blade storage cap fitted to the underside which I believe is standard.

I thought that the L39A1 was a rifle made for target shooting within the armed forces and had the service butt whereas that the Envoy was for the civilian market and had the pistol grip stock and a higher quality finish. The Enforcer was for Police Marksmen and had a Mote Carlo stock.

For those who are interested, I refer you to Page 513 of Skennerton's The Lee Enfield, 2007. It covers the L39A1 and features a photo of one in the MOD Pattern Room. The butt of the rifle concerned has a pistol grip. My other reference material shows examples with both types of butt.

I like the idea of creating a civilian version.  I do have a regular butt stock with a cheek riser on it so,it can go either way. Still waiting on some extra miscellaneous items...

Stanforth, I believe you are basically correct. But as with all thing's Enfield; there seem to be a few exceptions. I have seen L39's for sale with the Envoy type butt stock. Whether they have been changed after production, I couldn't say.
They are a great rifle though; whatever they're fitted with.

I'll have to check out my Skennerton! thanks Terry Lee

Goosic, how are you going to sort out the front(mid) band? The originals appear cut just in front of the band on the lower fore end; with the upper rear being modified to extend just in front.

I honestly haven't thought that far out yet. I have a No8 barrel band.  I'm just going to make some measurements  and gradually start removing wood until the notch looks right.

Looking at No4 & L39 pics side by side it seems that they simply chopped off whatever they didn't want?
Maybe a No4 band with a bit of fitting will do the trick?
We have some on here with both who might be able to do comparisons for you?

The faux L39A (in .303) had acslot the furniture cut out so a No4 barrel band fit. There is maybe 3/8" of wood protruding?

I'm not quite understanding the question HT. I am currently  waiting on a No8 barrel band to show up before I start cutting away any wood. I did make a locating mark where the cutting will be.
